Today is my 4 to 5 year old son's birthday. I'm up at 0400 finishing the wrapping of his new Zebco 33 fishing pole, a kite, a small wooden train and some other small items and trinkets.

We have this 'thing' where we end up doing these small adventures in the woods around our house. We walk out back and up the hills to look at the mountains, make shapes out of clouds, throw stones in the brook and look for the suckers running upstream to spawn, and find morel mushrooms along the paths through the woods.

But, it's not so much the boy following the Dad, as it's the Dad following the boy with his self prescribed title as "Captain of the Leaders" or sometimes, when he is really full of happiness he is the "King of the Presidents." Step out of line and Captain of the Leader tells you so. Miss throwing that stone into the brook where the big rock is and hurries to find another to get it just right. He could do that for days. And questions? Oh brother: why is that rock shiny? why is this flower brown? when you were a little boy did you have a tractor?

And so it goes, the Dad following the boy, and the boy as Captain of the Leaders. Throwing stones, watching for fish, talking and being silly along the paths. I don't mind wrapping presents at 3:00 AM because I am fortunate, happy and proud to be living with my 'King of the Presidents.'

to many many more happy birthdays Son...but can't 5 be forever?

Man what memories. My grandson died three years ago. He was five years old. He loved to help me with my tractors. He knew most of the common tools and would bring them to me. I still have his red wagon that he packed them around in. Five is a wonderful age. Please hug him for me and buy him an ice cream cone anytime you can. sniff

Man you've made me melancholy. Bringing up memories of my kids when they were growing up. Oh well, there are still grandkids. Get to babysit my 3 yr. old grand daughter tomorrow. I can make some more memories.

There's nothing like 'em in all the world. My son will be 11 on July 4th, and he still thinks all the fireworks are for him. As far as I know, they are! My daughter is 8 and quite full of pi** and vinegar. She will be Queen of the Presidents someday, and they all better look out! It'd be nice to be able to freeze time, but I also love to watch them grow and discover new things. I don't know what I'd do without 'em.

Fast forward. Three kids. Two through college, one in. My daughter with a son and my oldest boy getting married in June.

Wow. Same memories of them being young. Seems age creeps up on you exponentially.

Not ashamed to say I reached for the Kleenex on that one!
Enjoy it, for both you and he, 9N'er...breathe it in for all it's worth, cuz it's not there forever.

I lost my follower 40 years ago when I was 14. He was the hero of my life...I still ache.

Great post. Cherish all the b-days of your son. Ya only have them once. Before you know it, he'll be all grown up.

Seemed like yesterday I was feeding my daughter with a bottle and wiping up the mess that comes out of a dirty diaper. Now she asks me, "Dad, when you die, can I have your tractor?"

LOL,
Tyman

Took my 4 soon to be 5 year old Daughter to Kindergarten Registration day last week.
They asked her to count. She got to 79 and looked at the woman and asked, "Can we do something different now?...This is getting boring".
They never did ask her if she could read.

I feel bad for the poor teacher she gets.
Mamas' brains and looks...and Papas' attitude...
