My vote goes to the 5' model. We pull a Woods 5 footer behind our 640.

A 4' is too small
A 6' is too big
A 5' is just right for an N.

Philip..... ...generally speaking any 5' brushog works quite well behind you 8N. And the PTO shafts are made to be cut-off to fit.

But what ever make and size your pocketbook determines, ALWAYS use an Over Running Couple on your PTO shaft. The ORC is device that prevents all that rotory inertial energy from backfeeding into the tranny when you clutch to slowdown to go around the corner of the barn, fencepost, creekbank, irrigation canal, wife's car (don't ask) and driving you into the object that you are trying to miss. It also prevents expensive tranny noises. $60 cheap, gettcha one..... ....Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher

Dell, I wonder if the manufactures of the ORCs know what a good salesmen you are for thier product. Also does Intertec Publishing know what a great job you do selling the FO4 for them? That is some of the best advice given here.

I have a 4' brush hog. The tractor runs it with ease, but it won't cut beyond the tires, so it's a bit of a pain. I may sell it and buy a 5'.

I've had good luck with a 5 foot King Kutter. I rented one first from the local dealer (Klem's in Spencer Mass who are always pleasant to deal with) for a weekend last fall to do a big cleaning up job in the back of our property, then bought one this spring. I can recommend try before you buy but if not, a 5 footer will definitely work fine. The King Kutter seems to be well made.

Only problem I have is the hydraulics have trouble keeping the Hog lifted up if I disengage the PTO when I'm driving between barn and field, so I have to leave the PTO engaged and the blade running. Other less heavy implements (e.g. yard rake) don't do this.

In general the lack of live hydraulics on the 8N is a pain - I'm thinking of saving up my pennies to get Zane's live Thang.

Hey Jon. A set of Limiter Chains will solve the "keep hog up without PTO engaged while to/from field" problem. These are what people used before the Zane Thang came along to set the height of their mower, but they work just as well for what you want. Here's what a commercial set look like:

I also have some plans to make your own if you have some spare chain laying around and like to tinker. Let me know if you want to see them.

Hope this helps..... ..... .Ed

Ed, I can see a bad point about using stay chains if you get off the tractor to hook them up. If the PTO is engaged to hold it up while you shorten the chains you are dangerously close to the spinning blades. Maybe a S hook fastened lower on the chains that could be reached while still in the seat would be a idea to explore. I have the Live Thang and it works great for holding up the lift with the PTO off. What do you think?

EVERYBODY SEEMS TO FORGET, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO HAVE LIVE HYDRAULICS AND NO PTO IS TO DISCONNECT THE DRIVE SHAFT. I DO THIS ALL THE TIME. IT IS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. PHILIP.

Good point however a Live Thang won't help this time because he's looking for a hog for his 8N. :-)

What Mike says...
I bought a older heavy duty Woods 6' for my Jube last year. Tractor powers it just fine but some of my piece is pretty hilly and the big ol shredder back there makes it more interesting then I prefer. I'm going to sell it and buy a 5'.

General consensus is the past seems to be 5-6' depending on the condition of the tractor and the lay of your land. If your tractor is a strong runner and the land is fairly flat, 6' should be fine. If your motor is a bit weak and a rebuild is not in the cards, or the land has significant hills, I would consider a 5'.

My 51 8N works the 5' King Kutter hog well. Just the right width to cover the wheel tracks. Some members on this board say if you can run it over the hog will cut it :) that includes blocks stumps ect. So be carefull. I have only used it on basic weeds/grass. The only downfall is it throws a lot of trash/weeds ect back at ya out the front of the hog. Makes your legs aware you still have feelings in them. If and when you get one take it easy until you get the hang of it. Also they say 2nd gear is weak in the 8Ns.Not good for stump removal ect.
