I have a 43 2n that was was burning oil and smoking real bad the last time it ran. It had good oil pressue even though it was using about 2 quarts of oil in an hour of bushhogging. I checked compression on the cylinders. The # 1 had no compression. The other cylinders had about 30lbs. Putting oil in the cylinder raised compression about 5-10lbs. Would the cylinder with no compression indicate a ring problem or a valve problem.

Sounds like you probably have both ring and valve problems. With these symptoms, anything short of a rebuild is pretty much a waste of time. Bite the bullit. Fix it right.

Roger-

I suspect a broken ring given the suddeness of the #1 cylinder. You're burning a lot of oil and that indicates worn rings. The valves are also probably part of your problem, but sounds like you are in for an overhaul. Some people like to try putting some MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) in the egine to free sticking valves etc.

Ford specifies a min of 90 lbs pressure in each cylinder and you have 30. MMO isn't going to fix that.

Best of luck.
