Does anyone know if these n's can pull a baler?
Any paticular size or model? I would be using it for oat hay.
Thank-you, Paul

Dad drove one for years , a NH 68 , but lack of live PTO was a drag , it only takes about 12 hp to drive some of those older balers , dont try hooking it up to a NH 315 of 320 . There are still lotsa of good old balers ot there , not many with engine drive but a few . Use a bearing PTO adaptor , it will put less strain on your PTO. Happy hunting--Bill

This is very interesting, never seen (that I can re-call) a PTO driven baler. Field farmers here in Ca. use motor driven. To think that an N would have trouble pulling one, we need to see the picture Tyler(MD) sent. WOW. How did they get the bales up on the trailer? What do you guys think the best motor driven size baler would work?
Again Thank-you All, Paul

>>WOW. How did they get the bales up on the trailer?<<

My grandfather designed both of our hay wagons. The Neff's were the first in our area to have rubber on our wagons. We still have them on the farm today. We used a hayhook and lots of muscle to stack the bales that high. Tell me the 9N wasn't working that day of the pic. :-)

I also remember a scary moment when hauling a fully loaded wagon of hay pulled by our Farmall A. I was going up a fairly steep hill towards the barn. I had the tractor in too high a gear and she stalled out. I had trouble starting it and the brakes weren't holding the load. I finally got it started before the tractor was racing down the hill with the full load of hay behind it. I almost had to change the undies on that one!!

That reminds me of the good ole days. The 9N with a baler and a Wisconsin motor. That was a b`tch to handcrank after it stalled and was hot. I can still feel the momentum of the baler's plunger while sitting on the 9N.

That bale wagon brings back a lot of bad memories. Couldn't begin to count the # of bales I threw onto one of those things.

Cheers to the inventor of the 1500lb round bale!

My brother and I have both pulled the New Holland 66 baler with 8N's. Live pto would have helped, of course, but I was surprised at how well the engine kept up with the the baler. Proper adjustment of the baler will also go a long way in determining how well the job goes. The New Holland manual stated something to the effect that the "66" was about 2,000 lbs. lighter than their big baler- that's almost a ton!

You just have to find the right baler. Don't forget that these tractors were once "normal" size farm tractors. The problem now is that the balers that match the N have all been dead for a long time. I've got a picture up at home of an N baling.

We have found that that is the one job that we prefer NOT to use our 8n or 9n for, both the engine driven and the pto driven have been tried. We find that the plunger action of the baler really rocks the n's back and forth and puts alot of strain on the drive train. Also alot of in and out of gear to clear heavy piles in the winrows, due to the lack of live pto, although that is not the major setback. We felt that the abuse to the machine was too much so we opted to use the AC-WD, which is a heavier machine and it still rocks that pretty hard. Hope it helps, Good luck Ron

I have a JD 14T. I am going to try baling with my N. Hopefully I can get my rows small enough with the 7' Ferguson rake to do it. I will post after I try. (sometime around Memorial Day)

A farmer here in central Illinois use to do a lot of custom baling with a Ferguson 20 and a New Holland baler. The baler had a Wisconsin V4 to pull it though. To run a PTO baler you really need a few more ponies than an "N". Knew of several that used Farmall M and Oliver 88 around here on the PTO type.
