I haven't seen to much on this subject but I find it important. A reminder for everyone, before ya run out and start workin them old tractors, let them warm up a good 10-15 min. My experience three years ago with my 8N got expensive when I started hoggin with a cold engine. As soon as I increased RPMs I had a sleeve come loose, drop into the crank and disintegrate into the oil pan. (Still ran but it sounded pretty bad. Drove it into the barn grittin my teeth.) Did a complete over haul all because I was in a hurry. I say warm it up at least 10min.
How long do you guys let your engines warm up?

I read some thing in the local paper about saving fuel and helping the environment that made me so mad! I have tried for years to get my wife to let the car warm up with no sucess and then I saw this thing in the paper about how the new cars are fuel injected and it is a waste of fuel to let them idle because with the FI they won't stall so you should just hit the key and go!

This could get me in some trouble but a woman HAD to write that!

I consider this good advice for any kind of engine. I always drive a car slowly for the first few miles to let it warm up gradually. It seems to prolong the engine life.

With my tractors I let them warm up for 10 min or 15 depending on the weather. I've seen crank shafts break because they weren't warmed up. I live in NH and it can get damn cold up here sometimes. Always on the cold days I have to get the tractors out for some reason or another. Do your tractors have radiator shutters? Mine all do so on cold days I shut mine.

Well, well, another man from the Granite state.
Phred, like JDM says, it can get cold in N.H. I start mine at 1/2 throttle and let it warm up until the smoke is transparent (about 5-10 minutes). This winter if I jumped on it too soon, it stalled then I had to wait to get it started up again.

Good Advice!

I tried cutting some grass this morning and "rushed it". Strangest thing, being in a hurry to get into the lawn, I backed out of the garage as soon as she started, had to feather the choke to keep her moving. Started the mower and she died. Tried to start but all she did was crank.

Let her sit for 10 minutes and she started up again. I guess I flooded her by riding the choke like that. I guess I had it coming. If anyone would have woken me up that early and climbed on my back, I wouldn't have done much work either.

It was the "climbed on my back" that got you, huh?

Couple of minutes or until I finish my beer - whichever comes first.

Now THAT sounds like a good idea. Know where I can get one? Better make it two.

Better yet, how about a cooler that mounts to the hood...

LOL

No more than 5 minutes at a little less than half throttle. I usually let it run about a third throttle for a minute and then increase to about half for another 4. No idea why...I just do it that way...
