Granted it wasn't perfect but almost always ran at about 15 psi. I went to start it the other day and no oil pressure. Somtimes it took a few seconds to get pressure but always has(of course until now). I checked the oil lines and no problem there(and yes there is oil, I checked it first) and the filter is new then I took the oil line of the back of the pump and oil didn't even come out there. Could it be a clogged pickup? If it's the pump itself is it an easy fix? I don't really have much experience with tractors, just maintence so far on the 8N. I have worked on cars for years just not tractors. Should I drop the pan and do some more investigating? I can take the pan off like a car right(it at least looks like I can)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Paul

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to my 9n about a month ago. I have left it sitting after trying all of the advise given to you here without success. I am about to tear into it again in the next week or two. Post and let me know what you find please. I will do the same. Oh by the way you have to remove the front axel and hood etc. to drop the pan. Not necessary to split Engine from trans just take out bottom bolts (2or3). Alway block up good.

To prime the oil pump if it has been sitting and won’t pick up the oil you should remove the pressure relief valve that is located behind a big bolt head that is fixed to the upper center of the timing cover. Using a rubber hose and a pumping oil can inject at least a half cup of oil into the opening from which you have removed the pressure relief valve and spring. (Yes the relief valve plunger is supposed to have the little indentation in one side)

Put the relief valve back and try to start the engine. It should pick up the oil and the pressure come up pretty quickly if it is going to at all.

Do not use multigrade oil in the N engine. This watery oil is just too thin to leave any residual oil in the pump when the engine is left standing for long periods and this is what the results are. Not only that but the engine is not designed for multigrade oils. Don’t do it!

Thank you, Zane. Glad to get that indorsement. I'm a diehard straight 30wt oil in summer (Michigan) and 20wt in the winter.
I've been off board a bit. How is the cow?

Paul, You say you took the oil line off the back of the pump. Do you mean off the back of the block? If so that is on the farthest end of the oil gallery tube. You should have oil there.
I have read here that someone primed his pump using a air hose. He plugged the oil filler tube and blew air into the dip stick tube forcing the oil through the pump and lines. I would not use more than 50 pounds of air pressure. You should see the pressure on the oil pressure gauge. You could also remove one of the oil lines and see if the air forces the oil to that point. If you started getting air I would suspect a cracked oil pick up tube.

Sounds like you lost prime to the oil pump. The most likely culprit is the oil pickup tube that extends from the oil pump to the drain hole in the oil pan. But, before I tore into that I would try a known good pressure gauge. If the pressure gauge still registers -0- then consider investigating the pickup tube. If you look through the archives there is a ton of information about R and R of the pickup tube. You might also try repriming it through the relief valve at the front of the engine.

No you can not "drop the pan" you must split the tractor. The oil pan is the main back bone of the front axle support. DO NOT put 50psi in the dip stick hole! you will push all the gaskets out of the pan and may do other dammage! Do you know how many sq. inches there are in the oil pan? If you have to put pressure in the oil pan do not exceed three or four psi. Frank
