Looking at a 1952 8N. The right front axel (believe that's what it's called) right behind the radiator has been welded and a plate has been added for strength. Is this a common repair or should I stay clear of this tractor. The left lift arm on hyd. has been welded also. With these two welds Should I look at another tractor. Seller is asking $2400. Thanks for any help.

The front axle support may have problems too. That axle/support/pin is kinda weak. One 1 3/4" pin supported on each end holding the tractor up and the front wheels on. Everytime you hit a stump or a hole all of that is on that king pin mount.
Guy quoted the support to me for about $300. Easily go for more. That axle looks like something that could go for $100 or more. I had small cracks in the axle there where you are talking about but not into the web. The axle support was cracked and worn and I had $100 dollars of work done on it and its good. That included a new pin. I had to chase down replacements for the missing spacers. Missing the spacers is what allowed the axle to twist on the pin. Lot of things going on there around that pin. The guy at the spring & axle shop fixed me up. That ugly axle might be fine.
Guy could figure on spending that $100 on the support and get something on the price to replace the axle and be fine. $2400 might be a fair price even with an ugly axle.
FWIW

The lift arms are often weld repaired. Have not seen the front axle weld before. The front axle is really tuff. Something bad must have happened to break it. Could be dangerous riding on a welded axle.

Have to believe there has been either some abuse by someone or an accident. It may work a lot of years like that, but would detract from any purchase I would make. There are still a lot of good N's looking for good homes. Be patient.

Thanks for the information and comments. I think I will pass on this 8N and keep looking. This forum is really helpful. Thanks again.
