Another finish mower question

How level/flat should the land/lawn be in order to use a finish mower on it? My land isn't hilly but it has some bumpy parts.

Any thoughts on a 5' vs. a 6'.

I am looking at going with a Bush Hog Brand mower.

Thanks guys.

Sal

I got a TH72 mower and have pulled it around here for 6 years mowing pasture and it is pretty tough, I am always running it into a golpher hole, cutting into the dirt, have squalled the belt a few time but it keeps going. Very well built mower, although i wish mine was a rear discharge, it will chunk rocks, limbs, etc.

I use a 6-foot King Kutter finish mower behind a 2N. If I let the grass get too high, the mower's side-discharge chute will clog before the 2N bogs down much (and the cut starts getting sloppy just before the chute starts clogging anyway). If I keep up to the grass's growth, I can mow in 2nd gear with no problems. I've heard from SOME 8N owners that they can mow in 3rd gear (faster than a 2N's 2nd gear) with a 6-foot mower without any trouble. Others say they can't.

As for the bumps, I have a few spots that need smoothing that I haven't gotten around to quite yet. The anti-scalp roller on the KK mower seems to handle most of them OK. I'm not sure that a 5-foot mower would do much better.

Hi Sal,

I pull a 6 ft Bush Hog RDHT72 behind my Jubilee out here in Cicero. My lawn is just pasture land that has been mowed for years; a little on the rough side. The mower does a fine job. I would never have another side-discharge mower.

It will be flatter after a few cuts with a wide mower. The wider the mower, the more scalping you get.
