I just got a 47 8n. It starts and runs great but has a few problems I'll have to look at before I can start using the tractor for bush hog duties. My first problem is a dirty fuel system. The tractor will run great but suddenly die's. Inspection of the fuel tank shows debris in the tank. The sediment bowl looks to be fairly clean. I intend to remove and clean out the tank and dis-assemble the segiment bowl and clean it as well. My question is about the carb. I've noticed the carb assembly is split in two halfs. Would it be advisable for me to remove the lower half of the carb housing and inspect and clean the inside of the carb? I'm sure the carb will need a rebuild, but since the tractor is running so well, that is a project I intend to do at a later time unless the cleaning and inspection of the carb I described above is not worth my effort. Any advise?

I have a hunch that if you put her to work some real reasons to work on her will become evident. If not...well you will have the luxury of setting up scheduled maint and rebuild.
The carb rebuild is an easy job. The kit goes in pretty easily. Remove the entire carb. You may want to dress up the bowl/body mating surfaces with a piece of crocus cloth on a pane of glass. Over-tightening of the screws seems to be the reason for the chronic leak at that joint.

You may have an electrical problem. My 52 8n has a little rust in the tank. Most of the rust gets caught in the bowl. Some makes it to the elbow filter. It has not caused a problem yet. Going to take the tank to a radiator shop to be coated after mowing season.

There's suppposed to be a filter in the carb inlet elbow, another in the fuel boiwl and another atop the fuel valve inside the tank. I'd drain the gas, clean the tank well , install new filters and leave the carb alone if it's working OK.

Thanks, I did not know about the filter in the elbow or the one in tank. I'll check them.
