Just aquired my 1st tractor. It seems to be a jewel & a bargain, with a couple oddities. 1st: It has a cable, just below the choke, that runs into the top of the tranny. When pushed in, it's like going into nuetral.(Goes out of gear?)It grinds a bit if pulled out again while running. Setup appears to be quite old. Any Ideas? 2nd: It has a "Dash light" just above the patent plate on the dash. Approx 5 inches wide, looks of the period (old), & looks factory installed (extruded & flanged into the hood). Anyone ever seen a light like this on a 9N, or other? Thanks, Richard

That's It!!!! I went out & unscrewed the knob about 8 turns, shoved it in hard enuff to shear some paint off the shaft (had it running) and let out the clutch. Took right off! Still have a grin on my face! Thanks for the photo, my knob is identical. Only regret that it was a hi range that it gave me, but it's great to know it works. Thanks for the help, from everyone. Is that a patent plate, just over the steering column?

Richard..... ..yes, that is a pattent plate.

Glad you got your tranny working.

When you get a chance, you might want to "lubricate" thru the coil armor so it doesn't get rusted.

Treat the cable with TLC because nobody seems to know how to make replacements. But I think thats because the guys with mucked up cables, don't have a clue. I would encourage you to try and find somebody somewhere to make you a spare before it's too late.

Try Industrial Supply houses, Big HD trucking outfits. Carry the cable in and innocently ask if they know where you might get a new one made up like this one. Unfortunately, you'll have to "split" your tractor to get it out. (splitting is really not that big a deal)..... ....Dell

Your dash light is not original. The 1939's and some 1940's had a red ignition "on" light located directly below the amp. gauge. The patent plate was not on the '39's. There was a number stamped into the aluminum dash where the plate is located now.

BTW, what's the serial number on the tractor? You can click on the link below to help identify more on your tractor.

Serial number from engine won't do any good. Pretty sure it's out of an 8N, has a large raised "8N" where the starter bolts in. I haven't been able to decipher the serial number under the paint (it has a nice 8N paint scheme, red & gray is an 8N scheme ?) And I'm a little reluctant to scratch it off. It's definately a 9N, tho'. All the other features point to it being a 9N. Large wheel centers, I-beam radius rods & 3 spoke steering wheel, etc. Probably a '41 or '42. Thanks for the reply. BTW...Nice Tractor!

Richard..... ....1st year early 9N's, some of 'em had a ignition on pilot light. Usually had alumimum dash. Might even have a rare aluminum hood. Check with magnet.

Your righthand cable shifter is usually for a dealer installed 2-speed "Sherman" aux tranny. Cable usually freezes up and can't shift. I don't know wheather the cable shifted tranny is overdrive or underdrive. Even worse, I can't remember cable in or out for direct drive and obviously out or in for aux tranny drive. Always clutch for your aux tranny shift..... ....Dell

I should have metioned that I had the cluth in when it went back in gear, won't go with it out. Still grinds the teeniest bit 'tho, even w/ the clutch in. I'm not complaining, it has a great cluth & brakes. Much better than I expected Thanks for the reply.
