8N won't go into gear

My dad was bush hogging with a '51 8N going up an incline and making a turn. He was in first gear at the time. The tractor stalled and he rolled backward and jack knifed slightly. We disconnected the bushog and tried to start the tractor. It will only start with the clutch in, and will not go into any gear. It will die when the clutch is let out as if it was in gear, but won't go. I took the cover off with the shifter, but don't know what to look for. The shift rail looks like it can slide as I can see two notches on top align with a ball and spring. The tractor will not roll forward if pushed, it acts like it is in gear. The PTO lever can be moved, and appears to work, since we can turn the shaft by hand when it is engaged. Any help would be appreciated.

AL-

Are you using an overunning clutch on your 'hog? If not, you need one because the momentum of the bush hog will cause and "slamming" effect on your PTO, tranny, and clutch. It can cause a host of problems along the enire drive train.

The equipment is my dad's, I am familiar with the overrunning clutch from reading posts on this board, and will suggest he get one.

The shift forks should have notches where the shifter fit into them to move them. Line up all the notches in the middle position on each rail. This should be nuetral, and you should be able to turn the gears in the tranny by hand. (IF YOU ARE STILL ON THAT SIDE HILL LOCK DOWN YOUR BRAKES AND BLOCK THE WHEELS TO PREVENT SURPRISES) (Also if you have a load on the gearbox you may not be able to move anything until the clutch is in.)
The reverse gear fork will have only two detented positions. One will be nuetral and the other will be reverse. Somebody will correct me if'n I'm wrong, but I think that's how it goes.

Thanks for the advice, I will look at it again this weekend when I go visit. The tractor is at the bottom of the hill now so it won't roll.
