BY THE TIME I MOUNT MY WOODS RD7200 FINISH MOWER AND OVER RUNNING CLUTCH TO MY '50 8N, THE DRIVE SHAFT, WHICH CAME SUPPLIED WITH THE WOODS, IS NEARLY TOO LONG. I THINK THIS IS WHAT OCCASIONALLY KNOCKS MY PTO LEVER OUT OF ENGAGEMENT WHEN I SHIFT INTO REVERSE TO BACK UP, FORCING THE MOWER EVEN CLOSER TO THE TRACTOR, BOTTOMING THE DRIVE SHAFT OUT. WHAT IS THE PROPER WHAT TO SHORTEN THE DRIVE SHAFT? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. PHILIP

I question the need for the ORC with the finish mower. There is just not that much moving mass with a finishing mower like there is with a bushhog. Others may want to clear this up.

BUCK,
YOU DEFINATELY WANT AN ORC WITH A FINISH MOWER. THERE IS STILL LOTS OF INERTIA WITH 3 HEAVY 26" BLADES SPINNING. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO CHECK IS GET THE MOWER RUNNING FULL SPEED, PUSH IN THE CLUTCH, AND SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR THE DRIVE SHAFT TO STOP SPINNING. DO YOU USE AN ORC WITH YOUR FINISH MOWER?

Thanks for the hands on information. I do not have a finish mower but am considering getting one. I should have been more clear on my earlier statement. I did not mean to challenge. I now know that I will have to consider the ORC and PTO length when I purchase. Again thanks.

Phillip, the way that I have done them in the past is to put both halves on but being side by dide and not inserted together. That way I can see how much too long they are and mark them with a couple of inches of extra for clearance. Cutting with a hacksaw is time consuming but will work okay. Use a file to deburr both halves. If the male part is dead ending back inside the female end, just cutting it will do the job. I wouldn't want less than 4 inches of the male inside of the female, 6 inches seems better. If you look at the length of the female part inside the tube, it isn't over 4 inches long. That should solve that problem. Hope your PTO stays in gear now. Fred

Your cut the excess off. Cut an equal amount off both halfs. 2" inches on both made mine about right.
