Have any of you had any luck sealing a cracked engine block and if so what did you use to seal it? My 8N has a crack on the left side of the engine just aft of the oil filler neck that has been patched before in the past. Now it is starting to leak so I am thinkng about attempting to remove the old patch and putting a new one on. I hate to junk the motor. It runs great and has no water in the oil. What is the best product to use to patch the crack?

It is no doubt a horizontal crack from the freeze plug probably to the drain cock. Very common. They tend to weep water but do little harm.

I had some luck on a block by taking a die grinder and veeing out the crack. Drain the block and get it good and dry. Then I put a small bead of Hight Temp RTV sealant over the crack and let it dry. Then I covered that with a layer of JB Weld. That combination seemed to hold about two years and then it would start weeping again slightly (presumably from expansion and contraction). I had better luck putting the RTV on first as opposed to just JB Weld.

There are other cures, like welding (I would consider last resort) or stitching (which is drilling and tapping plugs). I think if you can tolerate a little weeping, the RTV/JB cure should work.

In addition, why not poor some sealer in the radiator, and let that help seal up the block as well. NAPA sells some pretty good block sealer and water pump lube, that might help. Dave

A mechanic friend of mine once told me never to use those sealers. His logic was if it seals up a hole in the block it will seal up the passages in the radiator. Anyone have any opinions on that? Maybe passages are a lot smaller in auto radiators than in the N's (I've never seen the innerds of an N radiator)
