Anyone here know much about 8N engine swaps? If so, I've got a question. I've got a 1951 Willys jeep with the four cylinder F-Head engine that had over-head valves. Anyone that knows Willys and Ford knows the two shared a lot of engineering during the war so a lot of their parts interchange. Most of the accessories on these two engines are the same I have already found out. My question is can the Wilys F-Head engine be installed in a 8N ford? By looking at the jeep and the tractor yesterday, it is a very close match, but impossable to tell unless I had both engines out and on a engine stand. Has anyone heard of this swap? I thought there may be a conversion kit somewhere for this swap.

Rusty, the F head engine is a later engine than the L head that was used when Ford and Willys both built the "Jeep". The GPW engine willnot fit into your N as there are too many differences.
Remember, Bantam, Willys along with Ford and Continental built the original engines. Later, only Willys and Ford. All internal pcs. were to be interchangable as well as external.
Your M38 is a militariezd Willys CJ3A and if you have the F head in it, only the intake valves are in the head, the exaust valves are stillin the block. The basic block for both the L and F heads are the same.

Rusty..... ....As intriging as that thought might be, old Jeep 4 banger into N-tractor. I don't think so. Remember, the N-Engine has a castiron oilpan that is also the tractor frame and supports the frontend axle. I just don't think your Jeeps stamped sheetmetal oilpan would be up to it.

And while Ford Motors was in the competition for the Armys GP 1/4T contract back in the late 30's and used a version of the N-Engine in their example. And while Ford was a WW2 jeep production supplier, I don't think they used the N-engine, but even if they did, they probably used a sheetmetal oilpan..... ....Dell

Good point Dell. I've got a good engine and drive train on this jeep and I keep hoping to find some use for it some day or sell it.

You might be better suited to sell the Jeep motor to a jeep guy that needs it...Then go for the N motor in the N....
Is your Jeep for sure a willys? Or has it had a FOrd engine installed in it in the past? I've got a Ford "Jeep" with an engine that as far as I know IS the same as an N motor except for some minor differences..

Yes the jeep is a 51 Willys, 100% original with correct numbers on engine and dash data plate. It still has the sealed carb with deep water snorkle attachment, sealed water proof dist. and 24v ignition and electricial system. I've got a good drive train, but the body is shot. What got my intrest was the flathead 4cyl Willys and Ford both installed in the M38 jeep during the war. It was the same engine made by both companies under the same government contract. Same block castings. Other than the name stamped on the block, they were identical. I knew the two companies shared technology for some time and I thought there may have been a conversion kit to install the F head motor in a 8n for the extra H.P.

Chris, All kidding aside, I would like to get rid of the mess. It would be a great jeep for someone with some time to restore it. Its almost complete and was running three years ago. If I could get $250.00 for the whole thing I would sell it. I thought about trying Ebay.
