Thanks for all the good advice folks. Answers to questions.

BOB: I'M CERTAINLY NOT THAT MUCH OF A HILLBILLY THAT I'M GOING TO CRAWL UNDER THE THING WITH IT RUNNING. BUT THANKS FOR THE WORDS OF CAUTION!

Evil Steve: It's an 8N, Yes I have ORC (put on by previous owner prior to sell :) I've had the tractor about a month), I really can't remember if the mower was running in neutral prior to shut down or not this is the first time I've needed to lift anything in neutral (with the ORC it spins a long time anyhow) I'll have to check into that after I get the tire fixed tomorrow. However, thanks I did forget the simple thing of checking the fluid so I'll do that first when I have the tire back on and am level. Must it be checked engine running and warm or does it matter?

Dell: Yes I do, but I am learning something new every time I use the thing.

Thanks for the advice I'll repost when I get the tire fixed and can dig into this a little more. I thought it should lift in neutral but wasn't sure since it works off the tranny's PTO. I wasn't sure if it was geared to work in neutral orginally or if something was broke. No use trying to fix something if it wasn't designed to do it in the first place.

You can check oil level either way, but I suggest removing the inspection cover and checking while running wih PTO engaged to also check for leaks in the ram cylinder, intake & exhaust cylinders (the two little pistons connected by a bar giving it an overhead cam look), and relief valve. Don't put yer fingers in there!

8 or 9/2 N? I'm assuming you didn't have the problem raising the mower before your blowout? I'm also assuming you are pulling your mower, not the undercarriage type mower, AND that you are using an overrunning clutch?. Check the PTO to make sure it's fully engaged. Take it offline first and re-engage.

If that don't work, take mower off and watch the PTO shaft in neutral and when moving. If it's still only spinning when you are moving, I'm going to venture that you're in for PTO shaft repair (gears are not staying messhed without the load from you tranny).

If it's spinning in neutral AND moving and still fails to raise the mower, you have hydraulic issues.

A spinning PTO drives your hydraulic system. Lift problems with consistent PTO output are hyd problems. Check hyd fluid level, check for water in the hyd fluid, pull inspection cover off and look for fluid squirting out of pump piston and the ram cylinder, replace relief valve.

Premie..... .....you do know that the N-Hydraulics is internally driven by the tranny PTO, don't you? This means, to lift your hydraulics without the tractor moving, you must put your tranny in neutral, and engage your PTO shifter..... .....Dell

Additionally, to raise the mower without the danger of rotating blades for inspection...do as Dell says and also remove the driveshaft from the PTO.

But don't, under any circumstances, put any part of your body under there without proper blocking.
