FOUND RIVET WHILE DRAINING DIFF OIL

I GOT THE TRACTOR REALLY WARM, CAME INTO THE BARN AND PULLED THE REAR PIPE PLUG TO DRAIN THE TRANSMISSION/HYDRAULIC/DIFFERENTIAL FLUID. THE FLUID WOULD HARDLY COME OUT SO I POKED A SMALL SCREWDRIVER UP THERE AND FOUND A PIECE OF METAL. I PULLED THE PTO SHAFT AND FOUND ONE RING GEAR RIVET AND ONE RIVET HEAD IN THE HOUSING. BOTH WERE STUCK IN SMALL SLUDGE DEPOSITS, LIKE THEY HAD BEEN THERE A WHILE. THE RIVET HAS BEEN CHEWED ON THREE TIMES BY THE RING GEAR. NO OTHER APPARENT DAMAGE. RING GEAR IS STILL TIGHT ON THE DIFFERENTIAL CASE. ALL OTHER 11 RIVETS APPEAR TO BE TIGHT. HOUSING AND ALL OTHER PARTS EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN, EXCEPT FOR SMALL DEPOSITS IN THE CORNERS.

QUESTION: SINCE RING GEAR IS TIGHT AND THERE IS NO APPARANT DAMAGE, I JUST WANT TO PUT THIS BACK TOGETHER AND GO. IS ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE RUNNING ON 11 OR FEWER RIVETS? I CAN SEE NO WAY TO REPAIR THIS WITHOUT REMOVING THE AXLE ASSEMBLY. I CHANGE THE FLUID EVERY 2 YEARS, SO I CAN KEEP AN EYE ON THIS PROBLEM. I WONDER HOW LONG THIS RIVET HAS BEEN BROKE, 10 MINUTES, 10 YEARS, OR 52 YEARS? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

There are two scenarios: One, that the rivet was never riveted tight from the factory and feel out, or Two, the ring gear is working back and forth and sheared it off. The worst that could happen if the ring gear is loose is that it will shear the rest of the rivets and the ring gear will just spin. My dad has had this happen to his tractors. Then you will have to replace the rivets with bolts that are around $5 a piece. This requires removing the differential.

I would suggest putting the tractor back together. If you have looked for any damage and checked for a loose ring gear and have seen neither, then maybe the rivet has been out for a long time. You would most likely hear a clunking noise when changing directions from forward to reverse if the ring gear is loose. Eleven rivets should be plenty.

I have never had that problem. But if it is just one rivet and everything looks good and tight, I think I would put it back together and run it.
