Hi All:

I've got a 46 2N. Am changing the oil and oil filter for the first time. In removing the filter from the housing, it appears there isn't enough clearance between the top of the housing and the bottom of the gas tank, which is right above the housing, to get the filter out. Is this right? Am I going to have to remove the housing and oil lines from the engine first in order to get the filter out? Hopefully, I'm overlooking something and or just simple-minded and don't have to remove the housing first. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Ron

I recently bought my first 8N. Just this weekend I got it to start due to a needed starter rebuild. I changed the oil for the first time. Maybe also the first time for the engine. No oil came out of the cannister drain plug, the filter was almost dry. When I got the cannister off the engine, sludge was built up almost a half an inch on the bottom. Cleaned everything up, ran soft bailing wire through the oil lines. Now I have 35lbs pressure and its pumping oil through the filter. Check out fram.com about a filter for your 2N. Its probably not listed, but they will email you with an answer. For 8Ns it is C3P.

Jerry,

I live in Houston also. Drop me an e-mail at thom.black@airliquide.com Maybe we can get together and exchange ideas. I am currently rebuilding an 8N.

Put a WIX in our '46, can't remember the number but had instructions what to do on the Benz 220D in it. Restocked the shelf with the C3P for the 2N also

There should also be a threaded plug on the left side of the filter housing so you can drain all the oil out of it.

The rotating and angling it to the side as I pulled it out did the trick. Thanks for the help. The replacement filter that I got from New Holland was actually smaller in OD and in height and, as such, was much easier to get in. NH assured me the smaller one would work ok and, in any event, they couldn't identically replace the original anyway.

I find on my 46 2N it is a little tight to get in and out. Work it a bit and you can angle it out. After the first time I changed mine I developed a leak on the housing. Turns out I was missing the fiber washer that goes between the nut and the housing cap. Wasn't one there to start with. FNH and TSC didn't had one. Made one out of gasket material. Never did figure out why it didn't leak to start with.

I have an NAA (Jubilee) so I can't help you directly. But I do know for sure that a New Holland dealer can sell you an adapter for the 8N that let's you use a modern, smaller, easier to remove filter. Approx $12.

Can you elaborate on this adapter?

On my '46 2N, it is a strugle getting the oil filter cartridge in.

With the top of the canister removed, pull the cartrige out until it is about an inch below the fuel tank. Then start rotating it and pointing it to the side as you continue to lift it. Eventually it will be pointing sideways and off the center post of the canister.

Install the new cartrige the same way in reverse.

By the way, there are those who have converted their N's to accept standard screw on filters.
