I just went to look at an 8N here in south-central KY. It had new tires, and cosmetically was in very nice original condition- it comes with a plow, disc, carry-all, bush-hog, grader blade and cultivator. Even had the original aircleaner duct with glass jar and the headlights even work.It runs strong. No observable leaks. The bad points: Hydraulics leak right down, may need a clutch, and smokes upon start-up(but clears up). The guy wants $3,000.00 Would you buy this for this price? (If so, give me a shout, as I dont think I will, and I may give you the guys number)

MY own personal opinion is that it sounds high to me. I just rebuilt my engine that smoked a little when I bought it and it cost me a little over $1100. You also have the hydraulics to think about. These things are easy to work on with these guys on the board but dont forget an engine rebuild is not cheap! Depends on if you are going to use all of the implements that go with it but I think you could get a pretty darn good tractor for $3000.

And If I didn't want it all, I know I could make a profit on what I didn't!!
No dealer just know that that kind of a buy for that much playstuff, is a fair deal, or a little return on my money. Ron

Ron: You're tempting me to offer the guy $2500!

I try to avoid paying "asking price" on such things. If you want it, make the man an offer that you can live with( the $3K seems fair to me, but a tad high if the hydraulics leak and the thing smokes...I'd think $2500 to start) and don't say another word. First one to speak loses. If you don't like what he says, walk.

Actually....I had the audacity to offer the gent $2K. I'm debating if I'd do it for $2500- but he seems to be firm on $3K. Seems like a lot to me, as I got my Ferguson TO-20 (with modern bush-hog) for $1500, and it doesn't have the problems that this 8N has. (Doesnt look as good as the 8N....but I can live with that!)

Richie..... .....N's hydraulic repair parts $250 and I&T FO-4 manual ($29 cheap). If you can read, not much of a problem.

Most of implements worth about avg $200 = $1000. Tractor worth about $2000. Numbers kinda pencil out. New tires worth $175 ea.

If you need an outfit, field ready, sound like square deal..... ....Dell

Hey, Dell!

Thanks for the info- In my short time here, I've learned that you are sort of the revered expert here. So I'll consider this my initiation.....a response from you!

I'm tinkering with the idea of going for the deal and fixing the leak-down..... just did some of that reading that you speak of.....and it sounds like the repair is doable.

Rich

PS. My original intent was to buy this package and keep the implements (I already have a tractor and bush-hog and cant afford two!)and sell the 8N and included bush-hog for what I paid for the whole dealie- thus getting to keep the needed implements for free. How hard is it to fix the hydraulic problem?

Leak down should be an easy fix. If it were me, I would take the lift cover off, replace the lift cylinder with the NAA lift cylinder and O ring(check cylinder itself for excessive wear, snd rehone if needed). I also would check and make sure the presure releif valve was no opening to early(or if it had crud keeping it open slightly). Clean everything and raplace fluid and you should be in good shape.

What a co-inky-dink!(coincidence)- I had just been reading about the NAA fix on another site- if I end up getting the tractor, that is exactly what I'll do. (I feel better, now that I'm hearing the same thing from several people)

Thanks Kieth
