I was talking to my brother-in-law recently (retired Indiana farmer) and he said his daddy also taught the boys to let the tractor idle awile after a hard days work to allow it to cool down. Is this proper procedure for our N's?

Hi Russ,

For once I'll keep this short and skip all the technical BS, but as everyone else here has said, an engine that has been working hard should not be shut down without a little cooldown. Although five minutes is enough to cover any circumstance, and longer is better than not long enough, most of the time one or two minutes will do it...Al English

I haven't drunk anything alcoholic in 20 years, but here lately, I've developed a taste for George Killian's Red after a hard day's work. Oh, the tractor...it's always a good idea to let it idle down for a while to help cool it down. I do it withe verything from my cehicles to weed-whackers.

Right or wrong I have always learned to allow an engine to idle for a few minutes after being worked hard in order to allow the engine temperature to stablilize and even out.

After using the finish mower, if I don't let my 2N idle for about 30 seconds, I get a tremendous backfire about 5 seconds after the engine stops spinning. It is loud enough to make the fenders ring.

its hard on the head gaskets and other things if it backfires, when the engine is hot and you turn the power (key) off the engines is still spining which draws in a amount of gas which is fired just like a disel that is running 20 to 1 compression because the pistons and walls are hot enough to ignite the gas except there is more gas than normal while running so it really explodes and which ever cylinder is hot enough to do this which is not controled by the firing order since the key is off, small riding mowers are like this, they burn lean any way and if you shut the key they will do the same, its always best to let it cool by idleing a short while
