Question. Battery went dead over weekend. Placed on charger and restarted then noticed on the inductive ampmeter that the needle didn't seem to be moving one way or the other. Any ideas on where I should start to trace this down?

If the ammeter isn't moving AT ALL, as in doesn't go negative when the ignition switch is turned on prior to starting, I would suspect the guage. As for the charging system, that is a whole 'nuther deal. :-)

Well, you could start by telling us the model of tractor (9/2/8N?) and if it still has its original 6 volt positive ground electrical or if it has been converted to 12 volts. Also, if it is an 8N, is it a front mount or side mount distributor?

Assumption being that you have a 9/2N (they tend to have more charging problems) : try taking a volt meter to your electrical system while it is running. A 6 volt battery should read 6.2 volts accross its terminals when charged, and 7.2 when the engine is running. Try taking voltage readings at the generator and both sides of the cutout relay while the engine is running. They should all be about 7.2 volts. Where you don't find the 7.2 volts tends to be the location of the problem.

Take those readings and get back to us.

Well, I have a 2N which doesn't have the same charging system as yours, but the voltage regulators on 8N's need replacing sometimes too.

If your battery keeps running down, it has to be the regulator, or generator. Check the running voltage across the battery terminals to start.
