Been thinking about magneto's

Been thinking that the electric ignition system, key switches, resistors in series, all that stuff is really complicated. I mean, how simple could it be...just run the starter from the batter and that's it. Let a magneto do it's own thing...and fire away those sparkies to the plugs.

Yep, during the war, the 2N's lost their battery starts and ignition systems and 2N's had to have magnetos for the war effort. But in all reality, aren't they a simpler system to maintain and use?

Just curious why the magneto was replaced again with the battery ignition system?? After working with this Farmall A and magneto it certainly seems simple. Problem with the battery? it just fires up the starter motor...well oh well, crank it and let the magneto fire up the old motor.

What do you think?

They used them in alot of race cars for years because they were real hot and reliable. Now they use the distributors because the technology is so much better as far as adjustable timing advance and rev-limiters and such. Some spark boxes even have spark retard for use with turbos or blowers.

Real good technology but they always have two of everything and a dash switch to trigger the back up unit if the first one dies..... Makes you think doesn't it?

Lawnmowers use magnetos. They always seem to start. I guess if you don't need lights or battery start, a magneto would be fine.
