Need advice on 8N engine overhall

I have had an 8N for about 20 years. (Have had a computer for about 2 months). I like this discussion forum. - My 8N uses about a quart of oil after 2 or 3 hours of hard use. I thought about doing some engine work this winter. I planed on replacing rings and rod bearings only. My son, who is very mechanicly inclined, says I would be wasting my time if I don't do a complete engine overhall. The engine runs fine except for the slight smoking and oil consumption. I would appreciate any advice on this subject. Thanks.

You can probablyget "by" with a rering job and then you can do a major overhaul that will last another 20 years. A major overhaul kit including new hoses points. plugs, condensor, even oil filter runs between 350.00 to $400.00. If you need the experianse rering if you want to keep it a few years spend a few extra dollars and do it right. Good Luck Stephen

Henson..... ..you can buy an awfull lot of oil for the price of a "quicky" overhaul.

Do you have enuff power for the jobs you want your tractor to do, if you do why muck around. Plowing takes more power than brushoggin' fer 'sample. Will it go up the steep hill? Does it start eazy?? Does it foul the sparkplugs with oil??? What is the compression readings dry and then wet. Only you know those answers.

You only save a few $$$$ over a full resleaved Overhaul. The N-Engine is built and made to be resleaved everytime it is rebuilt. Don't be cheep. Do it right so that you are proud of yourself..... ...Dell

Dell, To answer your questions, although my 8N does not have the power it had several years ago, it does have enough to do most of the jobs I need it to do. It cranks fairly well on a 6 volt system and is not fouling plugs yet. I'm not sure what the compression is but will test it before I start the project. At this point I am still undecided about what I will do.(I may just run it a while longer as is) I bought my 8N from an individual in 1977 for $1000. My bill of sale states that it is a 1951 model but it has a front mount distributor. The local Ford dealer told me that it had to be earlier than a 1950 model. The serial# on the engine block has deteriorated due to corrosion but the # on the bill of sale is 8NIH6928. However, I have gotten my money's worth out of that tractor time and time again. Over the years I have experienced many of the same problems listed on this message board. I wish I had had access to this message board over the last 20 years. Thanks so much for all of your imput. R Henson - P.S.-(I will be reading this messege board often)

you might be able to convince your wife that by overhauling your 8N as a project, it will keep you off the streets and out of the bars and away from wild women (grin)..... ...Dell

I agree with what Claus has said. I have read numerous cases on this Board where people have gotten by just fine with the mini-rebuild you are talking about. If you can get away with just a re-ring / bearing job, I would also take a hard look at rebuilding the oil pump as long as you are in there. It may be well worth the effort at this time. My $ .02.

It would depend on what the condition of the sleeves is. If the taper is ok and generally in tolerance, you could get away with honing the sleeves and replacing the rings. Of course you would have to cut the ridge. Same on the bearings. You would have to mike up the journals to determine if they are within spec. As you can see, that there is no definative answer without knowing the condition of the engine. Happy Motoring
