Just bought a Ford 8N in good shape. Plan to use it this winter for some plowing and I am wondering whether I can jump start the 6 volt battery on it with a 12 volt battery in my car or is that dangerous to the 6 volt and me? Would I be better off to buy some kind of battery charger that could be hooked up to it all the time? Also, anyone know how you flush out the radiator and engine to put in new antifreeze? I have an aftermarket book on the Ford 8N but I can't find any reference as to where the drains are on the radiator and engine. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have done this and it works:
1. Make double sure the trans is in neutral. This method bypasses the neutral safety switch. If you're standing next to the tractor crouched down by the starter when that big back wheel starts rolling you could get hurt.
2. Turn key on.
3. Connect one jumper cable (doesn't matter which one - the starter doesn't care about polarity) to the terminal on the starter where the cable from the solenoid attaches.
4. Touch the other cable to a good ground on the frame of the tractor. The starter will immediately spin. As long as the tractor battery has enough juice left to fire the plugs, and there are no fuel problems, it should start.

Using this method puts 12V to only the starter. The rest of the system uses the 6V tractor battery so there is no damage to the electrical components.

I myself use a 12V "jumper box" to jump vehicles. It can really come in handy if the tractor goes dead out in the field and can't be easily accessed by another vehicle. I carry a jumper box in the trunk of each of my vehicles. I've seen them at auto parts stores for around $70-$100 but the ones I use I get from Sam's Club for $50 and they work great.

on the left side of the engine block you will find a petcock to drain the block with, the radiator also has a petcock on the bottom left.
as far as jumping it you don't want to go battery to battery or you will destroy the six volt. There is a method (I personally have never done it)in which you bypass the six volt battery and jump directly to the starter. Someone else more knowledgable than myself will probably jump in here with the correct procedure.I think that it would be easier just to keep the 6 volt battery and charging system in good shape and avoid jumping it all together. Mine is all original and starts every time no problem.

Do not jump that 6v with a 12v battery. Chargers do come in with a 6-12 volt switch, just check them out. Also my 8n has a valve on left side of radiator and left side of block for draining, left side being if you are sitting in the command seat. Hope this helps and happy "N" ing.
