Well here I am again. My 8n wiring harness is trashed. I can't trace anything for sure. It has a side mount dist, has been converted to 12V. The ign swith is three pole but has not starting position. The seller told me to start it by jumping both sides of the solenoid. The alt has two terminals and is not the induction type. Where can I get a start from scratch wiring diagram including gauges of wire to use. Thanks for your help on my thermostat question

Go to the following link and find the diagram you need 12 volt or back to 6 volt. It does not give wire gauges.

Thanks for the info guys. In the 12 volt conversion diagram, why is the voltage regulator missing. Do you know what the part number for the terminal block is. Is this the one with the resistor to reduce the voltage to the coil. Thanks

Assuming your twelve volt conversion is an alternator not a generator the alternator has an internal regulator.

Steve; Thanks for the response. The fog is starting to clear. How do you tell if the charging device is an alt or a generator. It is new and looks like a car alternator. It has two terminals, one a plastic clip with two wires and another marked "R" or "B".

Pat..... .....generators are round starter sized things that need external square voltage generators, alternators are aluminum car looking things with built-in voltage regulators.

You have described a typical Delco 10-SI 12 volt alternator. The big stud with a "B" supplies 12 volts out to the battery, usually by connecting to the starter solenoid battery terminal because it is convieniet.

One of the plastic clip 2-terminal plugs is called the remote voltage sense (P-2) and is supposted to be connected to the alternator "B" output. (short wire)

The other terminal (P-1) is the exciation is usually connected to the ignition switch by a markerlight being used an "idiot light" just like GM does on its cars. If you don't use some sort of decoupling, you'll never get your tractor engine to turn off because the alternator P-1 will backfeed power from the alternator gutts and send it to the ignition coil..... .....
