I'm having a hard time getting this thing going. I have put in a new fuel valve, carb kit(gaskets and needle valve and seat),plugs, wires and points and condenser. Also, a new battery(6volt). I've even had it started and running for about 30 minutes one day. It ran great! I put it back in the shed and now I can't get it to start again. It "trys" to start. An occasional putt-putt but that is all. I've been trying different combinations of choke, throttle. I have pulled the plugs and they are wet. So, I assume that I'm flooding it. So I wait a while and try it again. Only to get the same results. I really want to get it going again so I check out the rest of the tractor and see what works. This tractor hasn't been running in about 10 years. I've got the "operators manual" and I'm using the choke (I think) like it says. Would jumping it with a 12 volt help? I've been reading the archives and have found a lot of good information. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!

You'll get twice the spark if you bypass (jump) the resistor. It is a small spring-type wire on the back side of the dash with the coil wire running in and out of it. This will help start a troubled tractor, then remove the jumper once it is running so that you don't cook the coil.

Jumping with 12 volts does this, plus spins the starter faster. If you jump with 12V, put + to +, - to -, and ignore that the 6V battery is hooked + ground. Only leave 12V hooked while starting; no longer than necessary.

Or pull it about 5+ MPH in 4th gear with the resistor jumped. If it takes a while to start, you'll get oil pressure in the process. It _will_ start if it possibly can. You do have brakes?

Don't just use any sparkplug. Bosch 7516 are the best I've found.

Hi Rick
I recently purchased a '41 9n which had been sitting for only four years. First I soaked the carb and, cleaned and rebuilt it. We had spark and it wanted to start but wouldn't. I went to change the plugs and put my finger over the holes and noticed no compression in the number four cylinder. We popped the side cover off and noticed a stuck lifter and valve-soaked them a few days then persuadeded them with a block of wood and a hammer(a small one).We turned it over and everything looked fine but there was still no compression. Next we pulled the head-we had a bent valve that didn't seat right. (apparently rain or snow worked its way down the spark plug threads on #4 and settled under the closed exhaust valve-froze causing it to bend).Putting it all back together it ran like yours for a while and would crap out. This time it was the coil - the key left on too long with the points closed I suppose.
Hope this helps- Mike

Since you say it is trying to start, you might try spraying just a little bit of starting fluid (ether) in the carburetor intake. That might get it going just enough to dry off the plugs.
You haven't mentioned whether this is a front or side mount distributor you're dealing with here. Any other info might be helpful. HTH

Rick, It sounds like the float is sticking. You might have to clean the carb. more than once to get it right. Also take the tappet covers off, look see if valves are closing, there have been a few posts lately about the same problem. Spray them with penetrating fluid, Marvel Mystery Oil, Also check to see if you got good spark. It should look thick and bluish white, could be the coil. HTH Jim

Rick

If this is the first or second time in 10 years that it's been started. It might be that the valves are sticking open.

I think I would change the oil and put something like Miracle Oil or Rislon in the oil. Take off the tappet cover and put some of the Miracle oil or Rislon on the valve stems. Let that soak for a while then give her a spin.

Ten Years is a long time just to set.

Good Luck with your new toy.
