If you lived in a part of the country that consistently goes below zero in the winter and want a reliable snow plow to get out, the answer would be obvious. 6 volt is fine for most purposes, most of the time but it won't crank at -15 degrees.
Answer - reliable cold starting.

I watched my Dad take a boiling hot water kettle from the wood stove out to the old shed and trickle that water up & down over the carb and manifold when it was -20 and the 'N' would start. Took a while before it would pull the transmission in neutral, tho!!! I'm not sure he knew WHY that worked but it did. Words like flashpoint and vapor pressure weren't farm words in those years!

Here in the Montana banana belt my six volt n's start when lots of twelve volt rigs don't. Only miss last winter was not the tractor's fault.

There are reasons for converting but cold weather starts ain't among them.

My 6-volt '48 8N starts to -20F here in Vermont no sweat.
Hoping for minus 30 next winter so I can test at that temp too...

That is a crock. My 8N fired right up when it was -20 F. I walked right over and started it after I plugged the block heaters in on the 12 volt diesels.

My N sets out all winter and we often hit -15 to -20. I have never had a problem starting it. With a little common sense and a reasonably tuned up tractor you should have no trouble starting it in sub zero weather with 6 volts.

Here are my reasons:

It is easier to jumpstart the tractor if it has 12V.
It is easier to use the tractor to jumpstart my old truck, if the tractor has a 12 battery like the truck has.
It is easier to find 12V accessories, such as: sprayer, lights, DVD player, travel fridge (for to keep the drinks cool....)
I seem to remember that I needed 12V to use the Pertronix ignition. 12V systems get bj8nmt all spun up and animated.
My generator was all worn out and needed rebuild, and I decided I liked an alternator better than Thomas Edison's original DC Generator. The tractor does not start any better or run any better with 12V. But I like it, and that's all that matters to me. I am now going to do some bush hogging on my NAA, and I will watch "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" on it's 12Volt DVD system, while I drink cold ones from the 12V travel fridge, while I talk on my hands-free cell phone (12V) and shave my face with a 12V Norelco, and use my laptop to surf the internet, and I use a 12V GPS system to make sure I don't get lost on my 6.5 acre Bar B Ranch. (It's a thousand feet from one end to other, after all, and there are no trees to use as landmarks!) All while riding on my NAA. I will be very busy out there. Very busy. I love 12V.....

Why would you take a 12V DC system, and make it so you could plug it in to your house AC to start it?

Simple answer, personal choice!

Some switch to be able to run 12 volt attachements/implements such as sprayers. Good reason

Some switch because the 6 volt system is hard starting. Bad reason! Fix what's wrong with the 6 volt system!

Having said all this, I converted my 48 8N to 12 volts last November and am very pleased with the conversion. Did I have to? No! My wiring was bad and I was going to re-wire and I needed a new battery. I had a spare 12 volt battery and an alternator. So I did it because it was cheaper than buying a new 6 volt battery. Could I have just re-wired and bought a bew 6 volt battery? Sure. My choice!

Mine came with a crude 12 volt conversion and a universal ignition switch. I fixed the existing system rather than try to repair the generator I found in the shed (Tractor was included in the house purchase). The starter was very old and weak, finally gave out completely. Even WITH 12 volts, it always sounded like the battery was dead, but would fire up after 2 cranks. With the starter rebuild, 12 volts can raise the hydraulics while it cranks. Laffs. Stay with what you have ifn it works.

Several posts here have referred to twelve volt conversions as an "upgrade". With that mentality no wonder lots get done when repair of the six volt system would have been cheaper and easier.

One of my two six volt 8n's missed a start last winter in the banana belt of Montana and it wasn't the tractor's fault. [Details on request]

Like Dell I can imagine situations where converting makes sense but no where near as many situations as there are conversions out there.

This topic is debated possibly more than the meaning of life. It is simply your choice. There is nothing wrong with a good working 6 volt system. Never has been, never will be.

As far as a 12 volt, it is more forgiving (other than able to power 12 volt accessories). It spins the starter faster. An alternator (if you use the GM) has an internal regulator that does not have points or settings. It just works. Once set up, it will run longer without preventive maintenance. The higher voltage is more forgiving of loose or dirty connections.

Is one better than the other? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If your 6 volt system works or can be made to work easily, why change? On the other hand, if it is shelled, and you have a working tractor, generally, and I say generally, a 12 volt system will give you less grief.

Remember there are exceptions to every rule. I once worked for a company whose only work rule was "All rules apply except when they don't".

If you need 12 volts to run certain implements (sprayers, etc) or you need to have additional lighting I would convert to 12 volts. If you want it to make the tractor start faster, then you need to correct the problem that is causing the tractor not to start easy in the first place. I see a lot of claims that the tractors start easier and run better on 12 volts, but I would put my easy starting (touch the starter for about 1 second) and strong running 6 volt system up against theirs any time. Of course, there is maintenance involved with either system, so the idea that 12 volts requires less maintenance is wrong too.

6-volts pro: originality. Con: needs more maintenance.

12-volt pro: no maintenance, cranks/starts better in the cold, you can jump start your wife's car. Also, I tend to get behind on cutting the grass, the 12 volts gives me lots of light for mowing at dusk.

If I was gonna restore mine, I'd go back to 6-volts for the originality, but for an everyday worker, I like the 12 volts.

Dell, I am really glad you didn't forget to remind us you know how to do a twelve volt conversion right. That must make about fifty-one times you have mentioned it! I am not overly electrically or mechanically minded but I have converted different makes of tractors from six to twelve volts, and successfully I might add. But, I do not find it necessary to mention it, each time the subject comes up. I do know why a man would need a remote cylinder on a #5 JD mower, without belittling him in the process.

You wouldn't- It seems to me, that 6V systems served these tractors well for 50 years. If a 6V doesn't work good, it probably just needs cleaning up/repair.....people who dont know this convert to 12V.
