I have a 2 + Year old grandson who is just
crazy about tractors and equipment of any sort.
He has never had any interest in cuddly stuffed animals or such. My other daughter, his aunt, thinks that such behavior is taught to children. Girls are given dolls, boys, tractors, etc. But I swear, this kid has loved old iron tractors and equipment since he was one. Anyhow, he loves to ride with grandpa on the 8N, and the golf cart. I just came accross an old 8 HP John Deere lawn mower. It is rusty a and doesn't run. Tires seem OK, it has a mower deck as well. I hope to get her running and painted up. He hasn't seen it yet. I also bought a 2.5 HP 14 inch cut lawn mower from and antique tractor show. I got it running and it has minimal wear. He likes to push it arround the barn. Doesn't like the noise motors make yet, though. Just a little news from Rootstown, Ohio.

Please be careful. A neighbor had a board balanced on his fender for his son to ride on while he was working his field. The kid fell forward and was run over by the wheel and the disc. The dirt was freshly plowed and was soft. The boy was not hurt too badly. That was a near tragedy.
Also as one who has a hearing loss, please do get good quality hearing protection for your youngsters when around any machinery. Thanks.

Agreed.
I use hearing protection when mowing. If it is something loud, I will be sure to protect his hearing. My 8N is very quiet idling.

I just got a Ford for my two grandsons $75 gonna take the good engine out and put it in a John Deere frame for them. but I will keep the Ford frame in case I find another engine. Their dad is all green and they want to be like dad. Incidentally, I started driving my dad's 8N when I was 8, and on a hill farm.

Please stop riding your grandson. One bump and into the path of those big tires. I have two grandsons I'd love to ride around but I won't do it. Instead I have a wagon that I can hook to my Cub Cadet that will make them smile just the same. Remember Safety First is a must with these Tractors.

Yes, yes, I know.
I simply ride him arround slow, first gear idle, on my lap, one arm fully around him, on six acres of near level ground, no equipment attatched. No brush hogs, no distractions. I began brushhogging the farm, 60 acres, when I was ten years old. Have had alot of adventures, learned alot, wouldn't trade the experiences for the world. City kids got into trouble or played ball all day, while I worked my hind end off on the farm with tractors and equipment all day.

Thanks guys for the encourageing words. Hope to post pics for you latter.

I always loved my stuffed animals(lived in the city....didn't have real ones..... plus they tend to make a fuss about keeping lions and elephants)....hell, I still love 'em! But NOTHING beats being able to drive something when you're a kid (or adult). If only someone would've given me a riding mower or tractor....or something when I was a kid!(had to settle for bike). Youi truly understand the heart of real boys!

Someone gave me his yardman 18 hp riding mower. I took the deck off because it was bent up.

My 9 yr. old loves to ride it around and sing. He's getting better at it, and generally avoids hitting stuff. I think he gets bored just driving it.

But just got a Costco garden wagon to tow on the back, so he can do some real work w/it. He wanted to haul rocks w/it the other day. I do make him wear his bike helmet.

I cringe when I hear of or see kids riding on tractors. They are not toys. They are dangerous enough for adults. You'd never forgive yourself if something bad would happen. Think about it. Steve 8N 169302

I agree. Someone local just lost a grandson who was thrown off while riding with his dad. His little body was no match for the rear wheel.

I'll let my little man sit on my tractor and play like he's driving all he wants while it's just sitting there with the engine off, but I don't want him ANYWHERE NEAR me when I crank it off and start moving. I hope and truly want him to love and and be interested in my various toys and tools, but it's absolutely imperitive and more important to me that he respect and appreciate the power and inherent danger in them too. Therefore, I feel that I have to properly convey my sense of respect for these items by what I do and what I allow him to do.

Just my thoughts. I get a hollow feeling everytime I hear a tale about someone losing a loved one liked this.

I agree, But there is a time when you have to start them out. They have to learn responsibility at some time or they will never amount to dirt. Most farm kids start driving tractors and farm trucks at 7 or 8. It also makes them feel like they are a part of the work force. Even if they just stear a tractor ideling in first gear while a adult throws hay bales on a trailer. Then when the day comes that they throw the bails it's not so much fun anymore. Dave <*)))><

I think I was about 9 years old when they put me up on a 9N or was it a 2N? I was a city boy and we were at the"cousins" ranch. I learned real quick that trailers cut corners (almost cut off the end tree but missed somehow) only it wasn't bales but stakes that were on the trailer. Had to stop every third or fourth tree, idle down, then into neutral. Then back into first, increase throttle and down the row we went. It was the first thing I had ever "driven" that had it's own power. Heck, I didn't even have a bicycle until a year later.

Thank's for the memories.

Gotta be an 'N gene' on the Y chromosome --- SirMatt

My 18 month old son is absolutely crazy about N tractors. He's got an ERTL die cast 8N he loves and he'll sit on my tractor and "drive" up a storm. He makes rrrrr rrrrr noises and steers like mad. I guarantee such behavior is not taught. My wife and I have been amazed at how fascinated he is with "boy" machines like tractors and lawnmowers, none of it encouraged. The guy across the street has a 9N he uses to mow the vacant lots next to his house and my little boy will absolutely throw a hissy fit if you don't walk him across the street to see the guy's tractor every day. I wonder where the "N gene" is on the double helix? It's gotta be on the Y chromosome, that's all I know.

Just be grateful they don't like video games and action figures!

Seems to me tractors are a lot more constructive way to start life!

I bought a 18 hp Bolens for my 11 year old grandson. $100, Took the mower deck off and let him drive it for a while to get used to it. Now he is ready to start mowing lawn and anxious to go. The engine is tired and needs to be rebuilt or replaced but the hydrostat works fine and it has good brakes. He is on cloud 9, The only 11 year old in his class that has his own tractor. Says he will do the trimming for me at $5 a shot and gas. OK by me frees me to do other things.

If'n that Bolens is a QT and has a two cylinder Onan I had to invent the wheel on putting the late model P220 in there when the engine in wife's machine went south. If you decide to go that way don't hesitate to ask questions at the above e mail address.

It's a Tecumseh 18 hp single cylinder. Model OH180 180002. Strange a 18 hp Single cylinder. They make rebuild kits with piston, rings etc. but I did not see one for this engine. There is all kinds of information in the Jap manufactures web site but Tecumseh has squat. I thing I would like a new engine that would directly replace it.
If I have to go to a difrent manufacturer I will be in touch with you. A good project for Grampa and grand son. His father is extra challenged at doing anything but watching sports.

I have never seen a Tecumseh in a Bolens. Might be a replacement for a Kohler. Depending on the model Bolens I have an Onan and easy access to a sixteen horse Kohler tractor if you need something measured.

Here is a site with a fair amount of Bolens information if you can wade through the ads. Maybe somebody over there knows about Tecumseh in a Bolens. You might also try the lawn tractor forum on this site.

Bye the bye the buttons were a hit here.

Norman,
That is exactly what I have been looking for! I want to find a small lawn tractor for my 3 yr old boy. He loves tractors and when he sees one he yells out John Deere, or 8n to anything that is not Green. LOL. But I thought it would be nice to find a small rider that I could let him ride and it would be "his" tractor. Already has the tractor blanket, and pillow. I think I have created a tractor monster??
