I had just gotten my grandfathers old 9N running again when I moved out of town to an acreage. In all of the excitement I neglected to get antifreeze into the tractor before winter set in. One morning I went to the tractor shed and there was a shiny freeze plug laying on the ground. There was no visible signs of cracks and she started and ran, but when I checked the oil, I found evidence of water. I haven't had the heart to tear into her again.

Does anyone have any experience repairing a 9N engine block that has been frozen? Is there hope? In despair, Rich (a sadder, poorer and maybe wiser man.)

If you're lucky, the freeze plug kept the block from cracking. Change the oil and run it and see if there is still water in it. If not water you may be OK. Just keep an eye on it for a while. If there is still water present in the new oil, you'll have to pull the head and maybe(maybe not if a crack is present and very large)magna-flux the block to see cracks between the cylinders.
