I just finished watching a video on 8n engine restoration. The books also reference using a "tool" to align the clutch to the flywheel before sliding the motor back in place. What do you guys use or recommend. Do I have to buy some special tool or is there something cheap and accessible that I can use. Thanks

I have a clutch pilot/alignment tool that has not been pulled out of the package. When I have replaced a clutch I eyeball align the clutch plate and secure the pressure plate. As I pull the two halves of the tractor together, I install two long bolts through the casting flanges, one on each side of the tractor. As the input approaches the clutch plate, I have the pto in gear. With a little tension on the long bolts, I rotate the pto and wiggle the back half of the tractor. Usually it goes together in a couple of minutes.

There is such a tool for aligning clutch plates. I bought one some years back to replace the clutch in a chevy pickup. It was a kit with different sized bushings that were supposed to fit different applications. I used it that one time and it has sat in the tool box ever since. Some of the major auto parts offer free speciality tool use. All you have to do is leave a deposit and they loan you the tool. Might check that route before buying your own for a one time use.

There is such a tool but you have the input shaft that you can use.If you take the four bolts that hold the input shaft out,you will then have the alignment tool in your hand. The seal in the input shaft tube should be replaced while you have it out.And a new gasket where it bolts to tranny. IMHO. don

This is the way I did it and it worked great! While you have it apart replacing the seal on the input shaft is a must, so why not use it as your alignment tool like Don said.
