Tractor started to loose power and would not accelerate. I thought at first the ignition was giving me trouble because the spark looked weak. I finally lost all spark and was shocked to see the cam gear was not rotating. Any thoughts on how to tackle this one?

Thanks Zane and Dave for your input. Started the job this morning and finished just a couple of hours ago. The cam drive gear was ripped right off the re-inforced inner sleeve. The ford dealer in town had all the parts I needed in stock :) I bought this tractor used about 6 years ago, it always sounded like a diesel when it idled, I thought this was normal for a flat head engine to sound when idling. She's queit like a mouse now, and WOW! talk about an increase in power! I thought that I could get away without removing the front wheels etc. though, untill I noticed the two bottom bolts holding the timing cover, Thanks Zane! My 8N has a side mount distributor and the cam gear is a bolt on type. It was nice to see that the gear can only bolt on in one configuration on the cam, this eliminated any need for valve timing, I just matched the timing marks on the crank gear to the new cam gear. There was about ten pounds of dirt and other debris under the crank pulley, I had no idea that there was a hole in there to empty this stuff out. Once again thanks for your input...Ron

If it is a side mount distributor first make sure the gear on the end of the distributor shaft is notloose on the shaft.

If it is OK then you will have to pull the hood and tank. Pull the front axle and wheels etc. Pull the timing cover and if you are lucky you may be able to do it like I do and prop each valve up with an 11/16" hex nut after you have pushed the valve up as far as it will go with a pry bar etc. This is tricky and if you hit one that has alreay been propped up it will shoot the nut out like a rifle shot and go who knows where.

Other wise each valve will have to be removed from the engine by removing the keepers and springs etc. That will mean that the head will have to come off too. This is not a nice job to have to do!

When you can somehow push each valve tappet up so it will clear the lobes of the cam you can then pull the camshaft out of the engine.

Good luck! You will need it!

You are saying the crank is turning but the cam is not. It sounds like the cam gear has stripped it's gear teeth. You will have to remove the front gear cover to get to it. I do hope you have the I&T fo 4 manual.
