I don't claim I know what is wrong.. But, my 51 8n was missing and generally running rough. I replaced cap, rotor, points, condensor, spark plugs, plug wires, coil, fuel line, rebuilt the carburetor, tested compression, and after no improvements I began scratching my head. I re-inspected the points and found that the distributor cam was wobbly. Wobbly enough that I could completely close the points without turning the engine. (I was most shocked that I didn't notice this before) When we took the distributor out, we disassembled it and found the shaft were the cam spun was badly worn and where the shaft spun inside the distributor was worn as well. A new distributor made my 8n PURRRRR . Check this as a last resort, scratching head possibility.

When was the last time you cleaned the carb and replaced the elbow filter? Have you checked the timing? Does it start and idle well?

Yep. Get a compete kit with throttle shaft gaskets, needle and seat, jet etc. Use carb cleaner and blow out all the little passages. I use a piece of wire to check the passages, and vlow everything out with compressed air. Make sure there are noholes in the flat and that the soldered seam is not cracked. You can immerse it in hot water and if there is a pinhole in the float, bubbles will escape.

Rowlett..... ....Check your sparkplug firing order, 1,2,4,3 CCW. Would you believe that these N's are so good they'll run on just 2 cylinders?

One of the founding N-Board members used to claim that 80% of all carb problems were found in the ignition system..... ....Dell
