I'm working over a '49 8n and plan to renew the front axle pin and bushing. Figure while it's down I might as well get that done. In the I&T shop manual it states to jack up the front end and unbolt the axle support. I am not sure what they mean by 'axle support'. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also, any other advice on how to renew the pin and bushing in the easiest way possible will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Rick, The front axle support is the metal bracket that is bolted to the oil pan, I believe it has 6 or 8 bolts that hold it. You will have to undo one side of the steering parts to get it out also. I used a hacksaw blade to cut a split in my bushing to get it out easy. Drove it back in with the pin. Also make sure that tractor is supported good. HTH Jim

Thanks, Jim. I know just what you are talking about. It took 5 power washings with solvents to get the inch thick crud off the support. Now that I know what the manual was referring to, the rest will be easy (laugh, laugh). Thanks, again.

Are you referring to all that crud being Kansas mud? If you are, I know what you mean since I go to Kansas to Phesant hunt. It takes at leat 3 good washings to get it off my ford 250 truck.
I just hose out the inside and let the carpets dry themselves.

Just kidding
Take care and support the front good when replacing that bushing.

Your off to a good start. However, I did mine a few years ago only to find out that there is also a spacer that goes between the back of the axle and the support housing. If yours doesn't have it like mine did not, you won't know it's missing. My NH dealer also does not show this spacer on the books. There were some posts on this Board last year about the dimensions of the spacer, so you might want to do some research if yours doesn't have it. Not to say that your tractor won't run without it (mine does), I just wish I had known about it before I did my job. MY $ .02.
