Thinking about purchasing the neighbors 9N. Has a continental engine, looks like in good shape. Are parts available and are they any good?

I too would like to know more about the 9N.In particular the 1942 model. I wanted a newer(1950-53 8n)tractor but I found this '42,it looks good and supposedly runs good and has been converted to 12v. The "ole gentleman" is asking $2500 which includes a 5' mower. The tractor has fairly new rear tires ,not weather checked).Sould I continue looking for the 8N ? What is there about the 9N that may or not be desireable. What was the paint colors?Thank you for any respones.

Another hint re whether it really is a Ferguson is the starter. The Ferguson starter (on the TO-20 as far as I understand and perhaps other models) had the starter built in to the gearbox. In other words, you used the gear shifter to actuate the starter (I don't remember what position in the shifter pattern)

If it has a Continental engine then it's not a Ford. If it just has a flat head, then it probably is a Ford. Parts for all N tractors are easy to find. I've never had to look for parts for a Fergie.

The Ford did not use the Continental engine. You may actually be looking at a Ferguson. They look very similar and the Ferguson used the Continental engine.

Parts still available for a 9N, but not as plentiful for a Ferguson. Ferguson is a good tractor.

Look on the dash above the steering column. Is there an ID plate riveted there? What does it say?

This tractor is a ferguson. Where do I find information on a ferguson? I see ford 9n, 2n, 8n and such. Is there rebuild information with the continental engine? The brakes are very strange and will need parts and a service manual to sort that out.

Go to the top of this page. See the word "Hop to:" next to a dialog box? Click on the pull down arrow and find "Harry Ferguson". Click on that, then click "Go". That will take you to the discussion forum for guys with Fergusons. Ask them your questions and you'll get better answers. Good Luck!
