Friggin'-A! I'm keeping the 8N!

As many of you know from reading my recent post "What's A Fair Price For This N?", I recently picked up an 8N, with the idea of making a quick buck on it. Turns out, after driving it around a little, and doin' a little bush-hoggin' mit it, I like it better than my Fergie TO-20! It has more power, and feels more substantial to drive. My TO is in better shape.....and is practically restored....so I may be asking for trouble(I suspect that the clutch on the 8N is nearing the end of it's life!) .....but I want to keep the N! Dont know what it is about these tractors.....but I've got the fever! Now I can play with all you big boys on this N forum (even though most of you frequent the Ferguson board too, as I do)\ I'm in the club! (When I have to split the tractor this winter, please remind me of the enthusiasm I have now!)

Most important thing when splitting the tractor is to be careful. Especially on that dirt floor. DO NOT USE CONCRETE BLOCKS TO SUPPORT IT. THEY BREAK. I use a motor hoist with a strap under the motor, support the transmission with a large jack stand, seperate then roll the motor back. Pretty easy to pull apart and put back together that way. Be sure to put a large piece of wood, or something substantial, under the jack stand so that it will not sink down into the dirt. You might want to consider renting a motor hoist for a day. Doesen't cost that much and the convience might be well worth the cost. Good luck with it and please be careful.

Glad you didn't leave us !

Enjoy that 8N ! Sounds like you paid a fair price . Not a steal , but you did not get ripped off .

As far as changing the clutch goes , not a big deal , just be careful splitting the tractor . I have split mine 2 times . 1 time for a clutch and second time for the ring gear . Check all of the above and the release bearing while you got her split !! As Dell says , get and I & T manual . I can split one in less than an hour if I have a helper .

Split a tractor in an hour??!! Darn, it takes me that long to change the oil! That really makes me feel good though! Only there's usually not a helper around, and I dont have a concrete floor or a hoist.....this is gonna be "interesting". I was thinking of maybe making up some sort of jig, that I could put under the motor, and just roll it back??? Anywho, come the winter, when I wont be using her, if it indeed looks like she needs a clutch, I guess I'll be doing it- so look for a new post from me....."Best way to split a tractor on dirt floor"! Thanks for the confidence builder!

Richie,
I split it the first time by myself on a tar and gravel driveway and used plywood under my floor jack to roll the front end forward . Took me about 1 hour by myself but the hood was already off . It took me a little longer to get her back together , by myself again .

Second time , I split it on a dirt driveway on my land in the country . I used plywood under the jacks and stands . I did have to take off the hood but my Dad was there and helped me . It really took less than an hour !

It is really a pretty simple job and I think that you will be amazed what you can do !

Just be careful !

If you can do it in an hour....it shouldn't take me any longer than 2 days! I just called a local tractor shop, and they wanted $150 labor to change the clutch- I think I'll just do it myself. I did a clutch in an 81 F250 pick-up that I used to have....alone, and with only a floor jack (I just dont know how I got that cast iron tranny back up there! But it wasn't that bad of a job either.) The N looks like it would be easy....especially with plywood. Can I really roll the front half on only a floor jack? Do I have to do something to the front axle/pivot area to keep it from tipping? The only thing I worry about, is, I know I'll put the two halves back together, and it'll stop a half inch shy of going together! That's what always seems to happen with cars, anyway....that last half inch is the killer. Thanks for the pep-talk..... I'm gonna do it!

On the dirt floor thing .... Plywood ,plywood and more plywood preferably 3/4". someone also had pictures of a rig made from a trailer tongue jack bolted to the trans to move the back half around.

You better hang onto your Ferguson for a spare. I have been using my TO-30 for allmost a year now and still haven't had to put a drop of oil or water in it and nothing has gone wrong with it either. This is my work horse and the 9N is my toy to play with. Glad you found a 8N for a good price too! Mark H.

It was a fair buy, I guess. If it ends up needing a clutch, it wont be a good buy. And it needs a lot of the things I already did to my Fergie. Wasn't a great deal....just O-K. No?

Yeah, I don't know what it is, but it's exactly big-boy toy size and thus managable, without seeming like a big tractor monster.

When I read the "Today's Tractor" Forum...it give me the heebie jeebies... I mean teh way they talk about Green this and Yanmar engines are junk that.

I dunno. Working on new tractors holds about the same interest for me as replacing an oxygen sensor on a 2001 Hyundai.....

Exactly! When I work on one of these old tractors, I admire the simple yet clever design, and the sturdiness and durability. I dont have to mortgage my life to own one, and my tractor will probably still be working when the new Yan-Bota-oti's are on the junk heap.

True, so true. Ever notice there are more ancient automobiles or Harleys than there are 10 year old Jap pieces of junk? I would be too intimidated to work on a modern tractor. These old tractors are so simple, then just about anybody can fix them.
As to your tractor, $1700 is a good price. Forget about sinking money into it-you'll never recover it when you sell. I look at it this way. I have a simple to maintain, easy to use tractor which more than amply suits my needs. Even unrestored, I also own a piece of history.
