Stupid Starter Question

On my recently purchased 8N: When I go to start it, the starter (6V) will spin the motor half a turn and then "die"- it just goes "Whirrrrr ". After several tries, it will give the motor a decent spin, and she'll start. Is this starter bad? Seems to me, if it were bad, it just wouldn't spin the motor...or would spin it very slowly, but why does it just "die" when the switch is still depressed? And if this is a starter problem, is it something I can fix?(brushes?).

Thank you in advance, my greasey but generous N brethren!

I remember in the early 70s our tractor was doing the same thing.my grandpa was still alive and I would go get the tractor for him to feed up,and it would take several times to get the engine to turn over a full turn the bindix always caught but it would kick out just a "wa"later. The best I remember ours was low compression or related to that because he took it to my other grandpa who was a machanic and he ground the valves and when we got it back it started every time with out the bindix kicking out.maybe check your compression and see if you have 90 psi min.in each cylender.hth

Sounds like the bendix drive is going out on the front of the starter. Better hang onto the Ferguson for a few more days. Not a big deal on the starter pull it out and inspect the brushes and check the bendix drive out to see if it shows wear in the gear and under the spring in the gruves. Mark H.

Thanks Mark. I'll pull it and take a look (after it gets worse...the tractor usually starts after the 3rd try...so I'll nurse it). I wish I could keep both tractors! But I'm lucky if I can afford one! The only implement I have is a bush hog...so I cant do too much with my tractor anyway- and if it's down for a few days....the bush-hoggin' can wait (but not too long....I've got 27 acres.....and try to do a little every other day or so....so it doesnt become overwhelming..... ..especially after seeing my neighbor blow through it in about 4 hours with his big diesel tractor and 16 foot hog!)

Mine did the same thing. I just cleaned the starter shaft (no lube - it's meant to run dry) and that solved the problem, for a short time. I had to replace a couple of pieces of the drive that were badly worn or I could have gotten the newer style drive ($$$). Been working fine since then.

N - joy.
