I have a 1948 8N. It has no shift knob. Just a balooned metal end. I want to put on a black shift knob that became standard the next year. Can I simply remove the shift rod and insert a later one with threads for the black knob?

Roger, I had the same problem with my 51'n. I thought the shifter was cast with a small swelled end. I wanted to install a plastic knob on it but it wouldn't fit. Someone on this forum told me to use a pair of channel lock pliers and try to remove the swelled end, because they thought it might be the metal threaded insert from a previous knob. It was worn smooth from so many years of use that I thought it was made on the shifter. Turns out that it came right off and I installed the new shifter knob with no problems. Keep in mind, that my shifter end was round but not in the shape of a knob, so this might not work for you. Also, if you try this, you will need back up pliers on the shifter to keepfrom doing any damage to your transmission.

Aw man! Why mess with such a fine design??

It's comfortable as a Hurst, and durable as a rock. Won't chip or crack or discolor!

In answer to your question, in a word: "I don't know."
