Hey guys, thinking about a new truck. Maybe diesel. I'll be pulling my 9-N around from time to time. Never owed a diesel before. Any input is welcomed. That goes double for you Dell. Whether or not you own one... Thank you so much.

if you get a diesel. make sure it's a Turbo diesel. The non turbo models barely can stayahead of their shadows. I own a 99 Powerstroke. I put a K&N filter and a Gale Banks turbo kit on it. It will pull a house down now. and runs like a Corvette. Kit comes with a new turbo, intercooler, trans comand kit, chip, exhaust system and some other parts i am forgetting. A stock powerstoke makes close to 10 pounds of boost wide open under a load. with this kit mine makes right at 20 pounds of boost. From a dead stop it will smoke those dually tires till i let off the gas. LOL I got the ford because dodge did not make a true 4 door truck at the time and chevrolet's dura max had not come out yet. I have drove the chevrolet they got alot of power but are pricey. good luck.

I've got 2 diesels a Suburban and BMW both 85's. The Suburban gets 18mpg and the Turbo BMW gets 35mpg while running A/C. You will enjoy the extra milage, no emissions testing and no engine breakdowns. Just change the filters and fluids as should be done on every vehicle and you will be happy.

Ron..... .... When I brought home my new 1995 3/4T Dodge Cummins Diesel, my then wife danced around and carefully inspected saying "I don't believe it, you did it (giggle, giggle), It better be the last one you buy". I said "I sure hope so". I hate buying autos, you never feel like you got a square/fair/honest deal. Its all smoke and mirrors.

For example, I traded in a 1972 Ford 390 V-8 AT 3/4T with 135K that I bought new for $4200, I got $7300 trade in allowance. Of course that included my $50 "cheap sheep shipper" canopy on the back. (try saying that fast) I actually had that stenciled on the canopy back liftup window. It made my then young son giggle.

I have the 180 hp auto tranny Diesel without 4WD and 8 ft bed. I get 22 mpg unloaded. About 16 mpg hauling 7000# trailer. My old Ford consistently got 8 mpg loaded with same 7000# trailer, 10 mpg unloaded.

There is a Dodge Diesel Board called Turbo Diesel Register. There are also Ford Diesel and Chevy Diesel boards too. Check 'em out..... ...Dell

I did a pretty extensive amount of research before I settled on the Dodge Cummins diesel. Now I've got a 93' 4x4 extended cab and have been very pleased with the overall performance, reliability and ease of maintenance with this rig. I was a european car mechanic for a number of years and have worked on lots of VW and Mercedes diesels with Bosch injection pumps. I believe the Cummins Bosch injection system to be superior to the other systems used by Ford and GM (at least in the range of used trucks I could afford). It is more reliable and less likely to require costly maintenance and downtime. I can't vouch for the newer Cummins 'drive-by-wire' engines, but I'm satisfied with the first American vehicle I've owned in over twenty years. My wife's midsize Passat TDI gets over 40 mpg, that should give you an idea of the efficiency gains that turbo-diesels have over their spark ignition counterparts. I only wish my 44' 2N was a diesel, but I'm happy enough with it to let such things pass...
