I have a 8n with front mount distributor. Last year I converted it to a 12V system, and it worked fine for a year. Then my Coil (12V) went out and I replaced it along with a new tune up and distributor. The old distributor had a loose bracket on the face plate. I also replaced the resistor that connects the ignition to the coil. Now I have burned two sets of point up in the last 2 months. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what to do next? All help will be greatly appreciated.

Ron said he had a 12v coil.Surely you would need more than 3.5v to it,wouldn't you?

Ron..... .....burned points are usually caused by a "bad" capacitor. The tinfoil connector often fails with a very small crack.

Of course this assumes you correctly replaced your ignition coil resistor with one of appropriate value and didn't muck-up your wiring.

12 volt ignition coil is putting out enuff sparkies even with a bad condenser for you to continue to run..... ....Dell

Dell,
Thanks for the info. But being a little slow on the electrical side; when you say a "bad" capacitor, are you referring to the condensor in the distributor? I replaced the condensor everytime I replaced the points. Also the ingition coil resistor looks like and should be the same as the original. I bought it from the same dealer I bought the conversion kit from. The only reason I replaced it was because I didn't know the coil had gone bad.

Ron..... .....condenser/capacitor, sameo-sameo. mox-nix. measured in microfarrids. Value of which depends upon coil design. As I said, there is a thin metal strip as part of the condenser/points connection design the sometimes breaks/cracks avery thin hard to see line and will prevent the capacitor from condensing the arc spark across the points when the points open. This can cause the points to burn. There is no eazy check except by wiggilling stuff around.

A by-passed or incorrectly wired ballast resistor will also cause the points to burn but will also cause the insulative tar inside the coil to melt and shortout and reduce your sparkies and make for hard ruff runnin' but you don't mention that so I tend to discount the by-passsed ballast resistor but to prove that the ballast resistor is really in the circuit, measure the ignition coil terminal voltage with the points closed you should have about 3.5 volts (2.5 min to 4.0 max) and 6 volt battery volts with the points open. If you read battery volts all the time, your ballast resistor is NOT in the ignition circuit and will burn your points and melt your ignition coil..... ...Dell

Thanks alot Dell. I will double check everthing again. After I put the last set of points and condenser, I only drove it to the barn.
