I found a 9n (or 2n) with an aluminum hood and steel wheels. The owner has had it since 1970, and he is sure that is original. I understand that during WW2 ford produced tractors like this. I have never seen one, and would like to determne what it is worth. It is in fair shape, and owner says it runs good. I did not look to see if it had the distributor or a mag on it. In our area, (north central Ohio) decent 9Ns are bringing up to $2500. Any ideas to the history or the value?

You found something quite rare.

Forst 700-900 9N's off the production line had aluminum hoods, aluminum grille, tranny cover, and aluminum dash assembly.

In the 'collectors' world, some of these tractors are monitored as to current location and owner and tracked.

Yep, an aluminum hood alone can fetch 2500.00 or more.

If your 9N serial number is in the 900 or less range, chances are it is orginal to the engine block.

You will also need to look at the dash for keyswitch palcement, IDENTICAL brakes pedals for both left and right, front spindle grease fittings facing forward, smooth rear hubs and not hot riveted hubs, small generator, and casting code numbers on the rear trumpets and other housings.

All of these will give you clues wether or not the 9N has been cobbled together, or intact and in original condition.

No matte what, acquire the hood assembly and tractor and consider yourself fortunate for locating a 5 star tractor if everything cvomes together. These tractors are worth the time and money to restore and I will purchase it from you soemtime down the line and help you acquire parts to get this puppy to show and work condition.

good luck. 9N'er

You should check the serial number to try and determine the year for sure. That would help determine if you have found an early aluminum-hood "n".

Rick...I've seen an aluminum hood/grille combination go for $2500...not the tractor, just the aluminum!!!

My recommendation is that you get away from that tractor...it's gotta be junk! Ummmmm m...where is it located? ;=) LOL

I'm in Northeast Ohio...if you need some local help, let me know...I have a restoration '42 2N and a '53 Jubilee.

I may have to check my sources, but I think the aluminum hoods were gone by 1940 and steel wheels would only have been in 1942-43. Look at the battery door cover - I believe the aluminum hoods did not have hinged covers but rather a snap-in battery cover. Also look at the grill. The fins should be horizontal, not vertical for an early model hood. The aluminum hoods did tend to crack, so if it is aluminum and in good shape, it is probably worth some moola. Also look at the rear hubs. The early hubs were cast with the axle. This setup also tended to crack and was replaced with axles riveted to the hubs. Original smooth hubs are also worth some moola.

The magneto would likely make it a 2N engine, but also look for a choke rod hole in the dog leg next to the hood. Since the magneto models did not have electric start, the choke knob was located in the front of the tractor so the operator who cranked the engine could feather out the choke.

There's an old fella in my hometown with a '39 9N aluminum hood...sn 9N254. His story is he bought it when he got back from the war. When the 32" tires finally rotted off the wheels he bought some aftermarket tip-toe steel wheel additions that bolted to the original rims and ran it that way for several years. Then he bought a non-running 2N for parts and swapped the 28" wheels and tires onto his '39. He still uses the 9N to plow and cultivate his garden. And he still has the 32" original wheels (temporarily installed on the "parts" tractor) and, NO, none of it is for sale.
