Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may cause this? Is there any links to online manuals that can be downloaded?

I would drain the oil from the transmission and then remove the top cover. Be sure to have it in neutral when you pull it straight up and out. Don't loose the spring for the detent that is at the back of the transmission cover.

look good at all the shifter forks etc where they are pinned to the shift rails by a set screw with a jam nut to prevent them coming loose. It sounds to me as if one of the set screws has come loose and may even be in the bottom of the transmission.

Ron, Is it a loud whining noise? We had a 2000 that made a bad whining noise in reverse, and the reverse idler and bushing were bad. We couldn't find parts so, we took it to a machine shop and had it reworked. Hope this gives you an Idea. John

John, not a whining noise at all but a sound like a ratchet spinning or that of a parking pawl in an automatic transmission trying to force it's way to lock...this is exactly how it sounds.

Ron..... .....a rattchetting noise in the tranny would have me at least draining the tranny fluid for a lookie-see instead of guessing at what it might be..... .....Dell
