NAA: Bizarre problem

This may not (and hopefully not) be bizarre to many of you, but I have a problem with one of my NAA Jubilees. It will run fine on a flat surface or downhill. It accelerates rapidly with out mis-firing. However, when going up a hill in any gear it starts to cough and eventually cuts out and dies unless I ride the clutch. I cannot tell if the electrical is cutting out, it is mis-firing or just plain choking. I am pretty sure it is getting gas as when I clutch it, it recovers. Also, this problem is non existent until it has warmed up good.

Could it be timing? Could the distributor not be operating correctly? Any other ideas?

Many Thanks In Advance!
Patrick

Can anyone shed some light on this?

It may be that you have a wire that is hanging close to a metal part on the tractor and is shorting against it when it is pointed up hill.

I once had an old man come in my shop with the same symptoms in an old Chev car. start up a hil or excellerate quick and the engine would cough and spit and when you released the accelerator it would purr like a kitten. Start up a steep hill and it did the same thing.

Turned out after lots of scratching of the head that the wires that go to the starter solenoid had been left dangling and had gotten close to the manifold and every time you accelerated the wires would swing into the manifold and short out the ignition wire that went to the solenoid that bypasses the resistors in automobiles.
Taped up the naked wires and tied them back where they could no longer reach the exhaust manifold and he went on his merry way.

Tal,

So what did it turn out to be and what was the remedy?

Thanks!
Patrick

Normally I would guess a fuel problem except for the fact that you say it only happens when it is warmed up. Going up hill requires more everything than down hill. I would try replacing the coil.

I would check the float level in the carb. just in case it is low. Timing advance could be another problem too. Mark H.

Patrick, I'd be looking long and hard at the distributor advance mechanism. It's under the breaker plate assembly.
