Mysterious stuck engine...

For a while now, I've been trying to get an old 8N to start (sounds familiar, right?!). I rebuilt the carb, cleaned the fuel tank and line, and I had it firing on two cylinders. The battery quit on me, and I ended up having to let the whole thing sit for a couple of weeks. When I came back to it the other day, the engine appears to have become stuck! The starter won't budge it, and neither will trying to pull it. I put a little Marvel Mystery Oil down the spark plug holes and tried again, but no luck. The only thing I can figure is that the new gas into the old engine somehow gummed up the cylinders, but this problem is new to me. Any suggestions?

Starter drive is stuck.

Put the tractor in high gear and get somebody to help you rock the tractor back and forth with the rear wheels. When it goes clunk it will be loose again.

You probably have a worn ring gear and or starter drive. If it continues to do this pull the starter and inspect the ring gear all the way around. If at any point the teeth are more than a third worn off you will probably have to replace the ring gear to ever make it stop hanging up the starter gear.

Check your starter drive before going deeper into the engine. The starter drive twice hung up on me and it appeared as the motor is "locked up".

Just an idea from the p-nut gallery :-)

Try removing the starter and then try to turn over the engine. I have seen those old Ford starter drives lock up the engine, and refuse to budge even if you pull the vehicle. It is worth a try. Good luck and all the best..... ..Greg

From your description, you might have something pretty serious. If the engine is truly "stuck" and won't rotate at all (battery, pull-start, or hand crank) it's not going to be caused by rust after sitting up one week.

Maybe a broken piston, rod, snapped-off valve that got into the cylinder. Think I'd pull the head off and have a look around before cranking any more.

Did you try to turn it over when the plugs were out? You could be hydro locked in a piston. That is fluid being in the cylinder and nothing will turn the engine over unless something breaks firsts. Pull all the plugs and see if it will turn over then. Mark H.

Plugs out, plugs in... makes no difference.

Sounds like a mechcanical lock up to me. Like was said in a post pull the head look for a peice of something that came loose. Remove the oil drain plug and see if you can find any metal parts in the oil. A rod can come loose and jam against the block but sometimes you will get movement the other dirrection on the crank. It sounds bad to me and I would find the problem befor you try to turn it over other than by a wrench by hand. Not sure if your starter could have jamed the flywheel to. Mark H.

Before I'd go too far I'd loosen the starter motor and back it away abit to see if the sarter is jammed, this could of been what seemed like the dead battery. Good luck. Bill

Did you leave the gas turned on?
Master Ford Man Zane says if you leave the gas turned on and the float sticks, the engine will fill with gasoline. Pull the carb / air intake hose, then the plugs, and see if you can roll it over using the tires as leavers (in gear of course) Watch to see if gas spurts out the plug holes. (DAMHIKT :-)
And many thanks to Zane

I thought of that, but pulled the air breather hose from the carb and there was no gas there. Any other time I've had a sticking float, I get (a lot of) gas out of the air intake.

Paul, If you were cranking this tractor with a low battery before you quit working on it the first time. The starter could be locked in the flywheel. Take the starter lose and rock it in high gear and see if it will turn. I've seen this happen before, And you will have trouble removeing the starter if its engaged. Goodluck John
