9N runs w/ little power

Help me, Wise Sages! My 9n starts easily, runs ok at both low and high idle, but under power it can't pull the proverbial greased string from pig's behind. Have new carb installed and good fuel flow, but engine won't make full RPM without having some choke added. I'm working with a 40" brush hog (trying) and it will barely pull light weeds in 1st gear.

Where shall I start to discern the problem? My little Cub Cadet lawn tractor will cut this grass with a 54" mower. I'm dismayed and stymied. All help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jon

Cleaning the N carburator.
If it is as cold as you say the problem may well be the presence of moisture in one or more places in the fuel system. Water likes to go to the bottom of gasoline and the bottom of the system is at the bottom of the carburator. You will never get it to run untill you get the carburator warm enough to melt the ice and get it out some way. The best thing to do is to take the carburator off and take it inside the shop and warm it up and then take it apart. Remove the big high speed jet needle from the front of the carb. It will be facing down and angled to the back slightly.
Be very cautious about the gas in a closed area and have no source of ignition so you don't set yourself of fire with the gas. The bottom of the bowl needs to be cleaned good and then blown out with compressed air. If you have the right tool to do it you need to remove the high speed jet that is the brass thing in the venturi (throat) of the intake that is pointing down and toward the front. It takes a long socket of the right size and don't try to get it out with a pair of pliers or you may get it so it can never be removed and cleaned. There will be several little holes in the jet that come into the bore from the sides and they all need to be opened with a needle of the right size. The best thing to use is a welders tip cleaner as it will have an assortment of different sizes and one will fit. Always use the biggest one you can get to go into the hole,

When mine had no power, or darn little, I had no or darn little compression. Just a thought. Mine still ran til the very end. It was so bad, the last time I used it, I had to pull start it.

Jonny..... ..Other than the obvious mis-adjusted main jet being set too lean.

What is your confidence factor in the centrifical advance in your distributor working correctly?

What is your confidence factor in your governor working correctly?

Both these will limit your engine power which you are "masking" by using the choke to enrich your fuel mixture.

Recommend you consult the I&T FO-4 manual for service proceedures. Readily available at most tractor parts emporiums, online sponsors of this most excellent N-Board, and even Ford/New Holland fer peets sake. $25 cheep, get one..... ..Dell

I agree with Dell. If you put a new carb on make sure it is adjusted correctly. Lack of proper mix on the main adjustment will make a strong engine run poorly under load. However it should (or will usually) idle fine. Check the governor. As you increase the throttle quickly yuo should see the governor arms move to adjust.
Do you burn oil or smoke? Could be badly worn rings. Also check plugs for bad fouling. These tractors will run on three cyliders although usually not well.

Good luck!

If you get more power with the choke out I'd look for an air leak, New carb on old manifold may need two gaskets or the manifold may need to be surfaced. Good luck Rusty 2N

Thanks for all your thoughts. I was going thru my FO-4 manual over the weekend and discovered the part on the governor and most especially on the distributor adjustment. I've got the front, not angled type, and will have it off this weekend for a checkup and tuneup. The weather's warm here in S. Texas...70's, so cold's not a problem, Zane. I expect the points are worn or baseplate out of adjustment and timing is so retarded that there's no power.

The engine makes no visible oil smoke and seems to hit on all four regardless, but does sputter now and then. Manifold and carb / gaskets are all new, etc.

One final question. My unit's been converted to 12V at some time in the past. Will the Ford tuneup kit's condenser be ok in this application?

Oh yeah, one other thing. My dipstick looks nothing like stock. Can anyone give me the dimensions of theirs and where the marks are?

Thanks for all your kind words.
