Trouble Starting

I have been having a lot of problems with an 8N with a front-mount distributer. The original problems were inconsistent starting, lack of power, and an overly rich carberator. So, first I rebuilt the carburetor and replaced fuel filter and the spark plugs. The tractor ran a little bit better. It started up better and wasn't rich, but the tractor still lacked power. After using the tractor for about 10 total hours over two weeks. It would stall after running for a few minutes. I checked all of the spark plugs and they were fine. I checked to see if all of the spark plug wires were delivering a spark, and all of the wires were okay. I replaced the coil because it would get rather hot when starting the engine. I replaced the condenser and replaced and regapped the points. But, still the engine would stall after running a few minutes, if it would start at all. I don't know what else could be wrong. Are electrical components shorting out when they get warm? Could my timing be off, and how do I set I correctly?

Russ , You might try spraying starting fluid in the carb intake, if it picks up speed or keeps running I would look at a fuel starvation problem . Good luck .

Try jumping around the key switch the next time you have the problem.

What is your voltage at the coil, engine off, points closed? Is the resistor under the dash still good? Just a few ideas.

Hope this helps.
