I have a Ford 4000 gas 4 cyl. I think it is a 1964. The plugs are continuously fouling out. They are always black when I inspect them. I have overhauled the engine. Rebuilt the carburetor. Put in a new electronic 12 volt ignition, but continue to experience the same thing. The exhaust smells like gas and it has always run rich. I have trouble starting it in the winter. I did replace a head gasket once and dropped the corner of the head on the gasket, but felt that it was not in a critical spot. The compression varies from cylinder to cylinder. I am at odds at what to try next.
I cant seem to get it to run very good unless it is running rich.
Paul

I have a 1962 Ford 4000 gas 4 cyl one thing you must do is follow Toney Jacobs advice and set up your 12V system like below but you mite wont to set timing a 8 degrees instead my engine will keep running when shut of at 10 degrees sow I'm going to try the 8 degrees and see if that helps when you get that set reset your carb back to factory settings then adjust the carb to where the engine idles the fastest then you should be good unless it something other then adjustments good luck Rod MI

When converting to 12v

172 gas convert to 12v electronic ignition
use auto light 437 plugs gap at .045
timing set at 10 degrees

Were throttle shaft seals installed when the carb. was rebuilt?

Have you tried a hotter plug?

If compression differs by more than 10 psi per cyl when wet you may have a warped head. Seems like you rebuilt everything else. If you damaged the hd gasket the head may not be capable of being pulled down tght enough to seal. There is no such thing as a "not critical area" of a head gasket. If it is using water mysteriously you most certainly have a head seal problem.
