I am putting the engine back together with a rebuild kit. I got the old sleeves out, new sleeves in, crankshaft with new bearings and I've been having a great time, but this is weird. I had ordered 3-ring pistons with my sleeves. The boxes all indicated 3-ring pistons were inside, but as I removed the sleeves I noticed that the pistons were 4-ring. Oh, well, I thought, I'll just go with it. It turns out that 3 of the pistons are 4-ring, but one of them is 3-ring. Does anyone see a problem with using this combination? The old pistons were 3-ring, but they are worn pretty bad and can't be re-used.

The archives have been a great help in this project, but I didn't see this situation mentioned there.

Thanks,

OKRon

Do not use the combination. Those 3 cylinders that would have 4 rings will have higher compression. It will make those three have to "carry" the 3-ring cylinder and just ends up wearing out every cylnder too early.

Think of riding a bike with one sore leg. Your good leg has to work harder to take up the slack and wears out sooner than it otherwise would. No material difference in an engine.

That is exactly why Ford specs say that compression differential across the cylinders should not exceed 10%.

If you can, return the 3-ring for a 4-ring. There is no appreciable increase in coeffecient of drag using a 4th ring and you get higher compression for longer time. Just don't use too heavy oil (not > 40wt) so that oil can circulate well enough to the rings.

Consider yourself fortunate for that vendor mistake even if you have to buy that 4th 4-ring piston.

My opinion:

I don't see, technically, why it would matter if you had a mixture of 3 ring and 4 ring pistons. Each sleeve shouldn't care. It might even be a good experiment. Tear it down in 30 years and see which sleeves had more wear:^)

However, if it were mine, I would exchange the 4 ring pistons for 3 ring ones and use all the same. It would just look better!

My $.02 worth,
Danny

I know a Volkswagon engine is differt but if you put a heaver piston in one cylinder you will feel the engine shake at higher rpms. You try to get them with in 5 grams or less of weight of each other for a good balance. I have rebuil a few of these and have felt the differance in the engines. Now I weight the piston and rods to make sure they are the same or very close. Maybe it won't make a differ on the low RPMs but I would'nt do it just to find out. Mark H.

Seems to me I remember seeing that discussed here before and the concensus was that three rings were plenty. It was said that the fourth ring only added friction.

You ought to be able to return the wrong parts for exchange.

If it were mine I would want all one or the other and keep the engine balanced. Mark H.
