Where There's Smoke.....

I decided today would be the day to change the manifold gasket and valve inspection cover gaskets on my 8N.

While removing one of the manifold nuts, instead of the nut just spinning off, the whole stud unscrewed from the block. Wouldn't be a problem, except antifreeze came pouring forth from the hole that the stud came out of.

Put the new gaskets on, and put 'er back together....fired her up....and guess what? She now smokes!(burning coolant).

I was told that it's normal for antifreeze to come from the stud hole.....so I didnt think I had a cracked block. But why is it smoking now???

Help!

Richie, Didn't anyone tell you that this is one of a series of things that happen to a turncoat? You may have to go to the West Virginia Witch to get that Ferguson spell lifted! L8R....Fred OH

Yeah.....I dont know what it is about the Ford.....I KNOW that the Ferguson is better made, easier to work on and in better shape.....and yet I want the Ford? The Ferguson is SO reliable....I'd be crazy to give it up for the Ford.

Richie, I don't know why no one has mentioned this: did you put sealant on the stud when you put it back? I feel sure a little coolant is getting past the threads on the stud and getting into the hot manifold.

Best procedure would have been to remove the stuck nut from stud, then clean old sealant from stud and hole, put on new sealant, and screw stud in using the old double nut trick until it was tight. Remove nuts, and install manifold.

Since the manifold is already back on, you might get by with just removing the stud, putting sealant on it, and putting it back.

A rule of thumb is, any threaded fastener going into water or oil passage or crankcase needs sealant on the threads, any going into a blind hole should never have any sealant.

That makes sense! Thanks, Dennis.

I had actually thought of that as a possibility....but I didn't know in advance that I'd be going into the water jacket, and I didn't have any decent sealant handy. I'll pick some up tomorry, and try it like you said....just unscrewing, sealing and sticking back in. It WOULD have to be the nut behind the air-cleaner duct!

Rusty; How much smoke and how long have you run it to see if the smoke will go away. Take a compression check and see what the readings are. Also I know you cleaned the surfaces down to bare metal befor you put the gasket on and torked everything to specs and in proper order? Mark H.

Hey....thanks for the new nickname! Goes good with the old tractors!

Ahhhhh....only a few drops of coolant got into the exhaust. I ran it for a while. It was smoking pretty good.

I've done this job before..... many times...including on the Fergie, with no problem.

Should the antifreeze be in that stud hole???

A little young for alzheimers....aren't we?

I KNEW I should've done that....why didn't I just wait till I had sealant?

Some studs go into the water jacket. That could be a reason but not sure you should have gaskit material around all of them. Mark H.

Oh....it's definitely burning coolant that's burning. I had dropped some coolant into the exhaust....so at first I thought it was just burning that off.....but it continued long after that should've all been burned up.

Check your compression and your gasket may not have seated right on the head. Mark H.

Guess I'll have to do that. (You do realize that it was just the manifold gasket I changed?-not the head gasket)

Thanks for helping.

This heat must be getting to me! No I thought you were talking about the head gaskit. I have never had a Manafold stud unscrew befor. And I would think that it would not leak into the manifold, maybe onto the manifold. If it did leak I would think you would need to get it up to temp first and get some pressure first. I would still check the compression just in case it don't stop after you seal that stud. Head gaskets do blow and pick the wrong time to do it. Mark H.

Yeah....if I were a stranger off the street looking at this tractor now, for the first time, I would think it had a bad head gasket. And I agree, that even if the stud is leaking, it should just leak, and not get sucked into the manifold- it's surrounded by the gasket, and the manifold is sealed good against the block, because there is no exhaust or intake leakage. Weird!

How's the humidity there?

Sounds like when I lived in Bishop, CA.- 105 degrees and 11% humidity. 80 degrees with 75% humidity is hotter!

Imagine if it were Kramer from Seinfeld! "Hoochi mama!".

Ironic that I should be mentioning a TV show.....I live without TV (I have a TV for watching old recorded sit-coms....but I'm not hooked up to an antenna or cable or satelite or anything)
