3-ring or 4-ring pistons?; adjustable or non adjustable tappets? I am in the process of overhauling my 8n engine. Today I called a machine shop and got prices on turning the crank, cleaning block and installing new sleeves, and grinding/servicing valveseats. I asked the machinest about the difference between the 3 and 4 ring pistons (old ones are 4-ring). I stated to him that according to my reasearch (on 8n discussion board) that the 3-ring was preferred over the 4-ring due to the extra friction of the 4th ring. He stated that he did not have a preference because he had rebuilt engines with both types and had never had any trouble with either. On the issue of adj. and non-adj. tappets, the parts man stated that he recommended the non-adj. because once they are set up right you should not have to re-adjust. On the other hand the adj. tappets will not stay adjusted and need frequent adjustment. I would appreciate your appinion on this . Thanks a bunch!

I agree with both Tim and Zane, are you sure this machinist is that experianced or really cares about an old flat head Ford? Good Luck Stephen

You had better get the prices for the job without the adjustable valves and the price for the adjustable job because it is a lot more trouble to do the non adjustable job. Each valve had to be individually ground off at the end of the valve stem to achieve the correct clearance and if a little too much is ground off one of the stems then the seat and or the valve face has to be reground to let it have less clearance. It is a guessing game to say the least. With the adjustable tappets you just grind the seats and then turn the adjuster till the clearance is right and they will definately stay where they are put.

I rebuilt my 2n 2years ago and put in adjustable tappets with rotators. Have not had to re-adjust them yet. Also, if the shop isn't supper careful on their installation of non-adjustable tappets, you'll wind up with a permanent "tick" on a lifter or two which you can't correct without a teardown.
