Hi Everyone and Thanks For All The Help,

I figured out today, thanks to you all, that I have the Sherman Combination Transmission, step up-step down-direct drive. I mainly use my 8N to pull a 5'finishing mower and a 5' box blade for my driveway.Occasionally I do some bush hogging with a 5' bush hog. My question is,do I really need this Sherman in my tractor? Please, any ideas, views,or opinions appreciated here!! Also, after reading the installation instructions I'm not sure how to tell if the output shaft has any slack or not. After you stab it in the transmission you can't see it can you? One more question and I'm outta here, the Sherman Combo tranny was only made to fit the late model 9N's and will also fit the 8N,right?The one I have came out of a 9N. Sorry this is so long, but I am really lost here. Thanks Again, OldeightNer

If you use a bush hog or mower behind the 8N you will not get much use out of the under range because when you slow the tractor you also slow the PTO. You might be able to bush hog with the Sherman in high and the tractor is low but then the bush hog might go so fast it would pick up the rear of the tractor and take you to the wizard's place.

OldeightNer,

If the unit you have came out of a 9N(2N) I don't think it will hit an 8N because the I believe that the input shaft gear is different between the two tractors. I may be wrong and if so I'm sure that someone will correct me.

See thread by "Jess" below (11/26). Good discussion there that will explain the Sherman. While the 8N is a more verstile tractor because of its 4 spd. transmissions, the 9N's and 2N's had only three speeds which really left only 1st and 2nd gear for working. And third was really kind of slow for the road. So the Sherman was the answer to giving these models more versatility. I have a Sherman "Step-Up" on my 2N and like it a lot. If I had the chnace, I would probably put in a "high-low." I feel that they are a plus although I occasionally see someone on here who disagrees.
