Just installed a new rebuilt engine on the 52. We had the engine running on the bench, nstalled it on the tractor and no JOY!. I have spark to the coil when the key is on but none at the plugs. I have changed coils, condensor with no luck. Lots of gas but no spark. Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks, Pokey When it ran on the bench I did not have the generator hooked up. The wiring on the old engine worked fine. Any suggestions on what to test or check out?

Pokey, Side mount with coil (in the can) Most likely the wire that runs from the coil to the dist is shorted where it enters the dist body... If you have a Meter put one probe on "BAT" Term of Coil and the other probe on the "Dist" term of the Coil (This is the Voltage drop across the coil Term's)

With points open = Zero ( this is most likey your problem and you will see a voltage indicating a short in the dist

With points Closed = Battery 6.5 If its Lower then check the Points and plate Ground.

Key is on for testing and Dist cap can be removed to open & close the points manually

Hope This Helps,

just went thru that yesterday, after pulling the new coil and cap about five times, it was on my 9 N the wire from the solenoid to the restister block, it was working off and on, changed it to a new wire, problem gone, wire was broke inside, had that on a 6 month old trk one time also. I used a test light and finaly found it, problem was sometimes it worked so I would look else where thinking coil or the new condensor

Thanks for the help. The switch seems fine but I do show a meter reading with the switch off at the dist, when I touch the wire from the sol. to the dist. case. I am going to change that Wire NOW!!!, Pokey

Wire was not the problem. Looks like the insulator on the primary terminal in the dist. is nearly gone. Are these parts still avaliable or what to use to replace them?

Jump the key switch and any other switch you may have. You can have voltage without high enough amperage to fire the plugs.
Be sure the distributor plate is grounded.
